Re: OIL CONTAMINATED
DANG.. its hard to see the F1 and F2 timing marks through the sight glass with the timing light. Im gonna try painting them with some acrylic model paint in hopes it makes them more detectable

Re: OIL CONTAMINATED
I hear that lowering the oil level helps to see the marks while adjusting the timing. Don't remember how much to take out and be sure to replace when you are done with the procedure.

Re: OIL CONTAMINATED
Thats a good tip. Thats the issue the oil clouds the vision.
Way i heard it was a smart man learns from his mistakes. A WISE man learns from others mistakes.
EDIT.. I will drain a quart out and also paint the marks. Double down cant hurt anything.

Re: OIL CONTAMINATED
Chuck, I never really had any good results using that timing glass, great idea , but just doesn’t work well which is why I just use a degree/timing wheel off the LH cam, it’s a lot of extra work but I’ve had good results.
I use Randakks timing wheel but originally used my cam timing wheel but the Randakks piece is easier to use.. some like it some don’t,,,,either way it is my preferred method and usually go it when I’m changing the belts which is better to do more frequently than not…
I am glad to see you are setting the timing dynamically instead of statically , I am not good setting the timing statically but some are,, I always end up with the excess 8-10deg over advance that Randakks always talked about.. anyway
Sounds like you’re getting close, good luck and keep us in the loop !

Re: OIL CONTAMINATED
I went to randakks and couldnt locate anything other than a motion pro timing wheel. Is that what you have? Any links to wheels and videos how to use it would be helpful.

Re: OIL CONTAMINATED
Chuck,, it’s located under SKU 100-1143 or 1144 depending on the year bike , they are $28 … I havea degree wheel like the Motion Pro that I’ve had for many years now that I’ve used for dialing cams in,, the Randakks wheel is similar but has the ignition timing events clearly marked to make it easier to set your timing ,,, depending on your year of bike 75-77 (more aggressive) or 78-79 (less so) ….
I like mine simply because it makes it easier to set/check the ignition timing ,,some don’t care for it so much,, to each his own ..

Re: OIL CONTAMINATED
Lowering the oil and painting the marks helped but still not super clear to see. I still got a erratic sounding firing. Im gonna use some 1000 grit and drag it through the points a few times to clean them and try again.
I am running out of time on the bike as its been sold and he's coming up from Texas soon to get it. Ive been trying just to get it timed as its the vlast speed bump to overcome and its done, so i dont have time to wait on one to get delivered i dont think. Other than timing there are no more issues.

Re: OIL CONTAMINATED
I just thought of another way to try. If i take a plug and tape it to the engine and roll the engine over with the generator bolt the plug "theoretically" should fire just as the F mark hits the line. Correct? Repeat for the 1/3 subplate?

Re: OIL CONTAMINATED
Well this afternoon i lightly sanded the points and did the white paint on the F marks with the timing light.
I did F1 first and was 99 percent sure it was at the mark on the engine case. Cleaned it up and painted F2. Again very sure it was on mark. For sure in the center of the crosshairs in the sight glass as best i can see even with the oil drained down like was suggested earlier.
I keep doing this because itll be idling at 1100 and for no reason go up to 2200ish. Ive used starter fluid at all the joints and no response with that test. Advancer is not stuck. Only thing i have left is possibly the springs on the counterweights are loose. I plan on taking a look there too.
Im beyond any level of rational frustration with this RPM issues. Ive done static timing and dynamic timing till i want to scream.
