Re: Test coil
Good Morning,
The GL was running great. I had to cut the air cleaner snorkel shorter so it would not interferer with the coil wires. Cut and fitted all the spark plug wires and have every thing fitting perfect!
I decided to take a test ride around the neighbor hood. About 2 miles out I brought the RPMs up to 4K and I heard 2 loud pops and the engine stop working. I had my son come with the pick up and we tied a rope to the truck hitch and to the goose neck of the GL and got towed home.
Note the ignition cover was very warm. I am wondering if the gasket cover was to thin or was it cheap parts? I will do some testing today or tomorrow. The yellow, blue and black wires to the Cole look good and same to the ones under the umbrella. I did not smoke any of the connections.
Caio for now.

Re: Test coil
Today I went out to start diagnosing why the GL stop running during the test ride. I pulled the GL out and was going to test the electronic ignition. The GL started right up! I noticed after a few minutes the silicon rectifier got hot and the three yellow wires go to the alternator got very hot quickly. Any thoughts on why the silicon rectifier and the 3 yellow wires so hot? I believe this is why the GL had stop running during the test ride.

If you wish to retain originality of the 3 yellow wires connections,
Although I don't the names of several businesses where you can find original replacement terminals and reproduction plastic connector sections, surely some one here will give you their personal recommendations.
additionally...
The silicon rectifier is always very warm when it's doing its job.
*** Make sure its finned aluminum case has a very clean/solid ground path connection surfaces, as well.
Why?
Although not often reported, and for one member, controversial, my 1975 GL1000 (~2012ish) and bluethunder's GL1000 (~2016ish) had both seen 17+ volts dc measured at the battery posts while our bike's engine were idling.

Re: Test coil
For some reason I cannot post a picture. Not sure why. I was able before.
The three yellow wire connector is clean and no burn marks. If I can post a picture I can explain that one side of the connector and wires get really hot.

My picture did come through the three yellow wires that go in the umbrella cover is the side that gets really hot. I will take a small file and clean up the copper.

Re: Test coil
Also, when I pull electrical connectors apart after I clean them I add dielectric grease to the connectors before putting them back together. It helps keep the connection clean and dry.

Re: Test coil
Resistance in a circuit equals heat
I would use a wire brush before using a file. The file is going to remove material and cause a looser connection
A loose connection equals resistance equals heat.
