Well, I figure ya'll like pictures, so here are a couple....

IMG_0434.JPG
Engine came out without to much difficulty...but boy, that bugger is heavy! lifted it up on to a table...bout all I could do to get her up there.

The biggest issue I had was when I took off the exhaust, I found this:
IMG_0435.JPG
IMG_0436.JPG
Seems the exhaust has rusted a little bit. I was hoping they were solid, and I could clean up the exhaust, and recoup some of the money from the project. Not sure if I can fix it up or not...

One good thing that did come out of pulling the engine was that I found a hidden set of keys. This bike had a set of Bates bags and trunk on it at one time. Only bad part was I didn't have the keys for any of the locks. Well, strung up on the center stand was a set of keys black taped up...sort of. Turns out one of the keys fits the locks on the bags and trunk, so now when I go to sell them, I can hopefully get a little more for them...just need to figure out how much to price them for.

So far, the frame seems to be in good shape..little bit of surface rust, but nothing more. Now I can get the tank out, and strip the rest of the frame down for whenever I decide what color I want the frame to be.

Coming along slow, but steady. :-D

I figure they will tie into the paint scheme I am thinking of....now to just do everything else mechanically before I get carried away with paint. Every so often, I pull up the video of No Quarter just to listen to the pipes...

On top of my basic mods, I think I am going to fit a Busa front end to the bike to make it handle better, brake better, and look really tough! :)

As I look at the notes I've been writing for the project, I just wonder when I'll get to ride it for the first time....maybe a couple years from now! :)

Might as well keep upping my post count. :-D Got the tank cleaned out today using Muriatic acid. Worked great! No more rust! I got held up taking the clutch out, because I forgot I needed the special wrench to take the clutch nut off. Have one on the way...

I also bought a set of Busa forks off Ebay....so now I get to dive into modifying the front end. They came off of an 07, so 30 years newer should just bolt right up, correct? :IDTS: Now I just need to pick up a top triple clamp, wheel with rotors, and set of brakes, and I should have a good front end. I need to figure out how low it would sit if I use the stock steering head location. A little bit lowered is desired, as I can't touch the ground with a seat on it! :) I know to much is bad.

Bert has a lot of specifics in his posts on the Busa swap.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Yep! I've been reading, and re-reading both his build, as well as KMR's build to get ideas. Hopefully I didn't step to far into the unknown....

Being that I am going to run a Busa front wheel, (which is a 17" rim) what rear wheel do you guys think I should run? I do not think I am up for making a rear Busa wheel work, so it'll have to be one that bolts up. :)

For those of you that do not know what a Busa wheel looks like, here is an example:

Figured I'd update this just a little bit, as I finally got time to pull the engine down a bit. Nothing to odd to report. Have to find out that this does in fact have the hotter cams in it. I was slightly surprised to find that the valve rocker assembly is just flipped for the right side. I started with the left side, and was surprised when I pulled the right that is was the same part, just upside down.

It looks a little bit like she was on her way to being froze up...look like puddles stained in the bottom of the cylinder.

Here are some pictures of how she sits....

Here is the right side....rear cylinder.

Right rear cylinder was the one that had a light coating on rust on the intake valve.

Kind of nice to still see marks from the original honing, figure a light hone will clean up the cylinders. Do you guys think I should throw new rings in when I reassemble the engine just cause I'm in there?

The light honing should be enough. There have been frozen engines that came back to life real well after a little honing and regular riding.
Parting the cases on these isn't an easy job. Wingovations can give advice about that and maybe even have the parts you'd need.

Yea, it does look a bit more complex a split than other engines I've worked on. I've spent a good portion of time looking over Old Fogey's pictures of when he rebuilt his engine to get an idea of what I am up against, and what I should replace while in there.

Chains that flex are way better than rigid ones. That does not look bad to me, but the normal way to check a chain is to clamp the chain on on the chain ring and see how the last engaged tooth lines up with the chain. If you have a bunch of slack in the last link then the chain is stretched or the chain ring is worn. Bet that chain and chain ring is just fine.

Yea, I think the chain is just fine as well....just wanted someone other than me posting to this. :)

I am at somewhat of a crossroads....figured I'd freshen up the rings, and am in need of a good gasket softener, cause I need to scrape a bunch! Didn't know if anyone had a line on better priced rings...not a whole lot of info out there on the subject.

My other thing that I am pondering is if I should replace the water pump while the engine is apart, or throw it back in and call it good. Only reason I haven't yet ordered one is this one is tight as a drum....

Not to much to report...received the MOPAR Stud N' Bearing Mount Adhesive so I can start sticking bearings.

These showed up today....

Now I just need to figure out what bearings I can get to work with the steering head. :-)
