Are you going to the Central in WI?

The bags are securely mounted and I've had no problems with them. The lids, however have been giving me some grief as they seem to think that they're birds and are always flying off when I least expect it. On my recent trip to Muskegon and the Gilmore show the left one took flight as we pulled away from Doug's house on the day of the show. Then, on the way home the right one took off while doing 70 on I-94 after a brief stop. What's up with that?! Maybe it's because I'm sometimes forgetful and don't latch them, or maybe it's the onset of OldTimer's Disease (not likely since things like this have always seemed to find me), or perhaps I've just got bats in my belfry. Whatever, I hadda fix it.

{Yes, there are more elegant methods, fancy-schmancy kits and expensive solutions. Have you forgotten that I'm a cheap sumbeach?}


Find some appropriate line ... parachute cord, coated cable, or do like I did ... take a pair of good shoestrings
off a crappy pair of old shoes.


Find 8 electrical eyelet connectors to fit the line from your vast collection.


You only have 3 so make a trip to NAPA.


Thread the line through the eyelets.


Cut off the 4 aglets (or aiglets) and finish the ends so they don't fray.


Crimp the four aglet-end eyelets to their lines.


Pull out all the machine screw drawers in your vast collection and find some you like.


That's the plan, Man.


Debate with yourself over how to attach the line to the bag lid.
Drill a hole on the inside edge? ... no ...


Drill out the top rivet holding the lid latch. Yes.


Apply some kind of sealant (silicone, weatherstrip adhesive , epoxy, etc.) to the hole
and bolt and slip it in.


Put on the eyelet, washer, lock washer. Spin on the nut and tighten it up.


Make sure the eyelet and cord point toward the inside of the lid.


Cut off the bolts' excess length.


Looks OK from the outside (I'd prefer rivets or JIS screws but like working from the free screw collection).


1. Remove one cap screw (your choice) and washer from the bag's lid lock.
2. Put the still-uncrimped eyelet on the bolt and adjust the length of the line.
3. Cut the line, finish the end and crimp the eyelet.
4. Install the eyelet, washer and cap nut.
5. Repeat 1-4 three more times.


And there you have it; bag lids that have a proper place and will no longer take flight.

Yep, I had to google aglet.

Now instead of flying off, they will beat up the side of the bag!

Good job on the retaining straps....they are mounted in a very similar manner to my Valkyrie's lids.

They can't really beat up the bags much worse than they already are.

Surfing the forum and saw this on the 5th page, can't have that.

Winnie may be down because of a shot battery ... but she ain't dead. Gotta get her fixed next hometime.

I think a nice no-maintenance battery would be good. Less than a Ben would be perfect.

I can arrange my schedule as long as I stay out a minimum of 11 days. But then there's Katy to consider ... she's become kinda needy (I do like that ) and doesn't feel like sharing me out. Got her agreement on the Ole Fogey trip and will be available for that when y'all come over for the sleep-over (you decide how many nights and let me know in advance, K?) and breakfast on Oct. 18th.

She only agreed because she truly does LOVE all of you guys.

Yep, six months now and it feels like forever. Not an easy 2nd career but sure feels good to be working.

I moved back to cali and have just now got me a new wing its an 84 but im pretty partial to it . good luck on your driving career and I hope you do well in it and it treats you well good money but I got to where I hated being gone all the time and my wifes health wasn't the greatest so I quit driving .
