I do need to clarify.... when I said "sand" I did not mean SAND to remove material.... rather just barely float the 1000 grit to take off the edge between the two base coats and any other "bips" sticking up in the paint

now to apply the "second" part.... this is a colored transparent lacquer.... this is gone over multiple times.... up and down and back and forth so as to get a nice even coat.... put this on to deep too fast and you will end up with a blochy job. you can see that by having a silver and blue base cat, I get two colors as this is laid down

now for the decals... I got these off flea-bay... get some soapy water and lay this under the decal area so you can float the decal... lay it out where you want it.... there will be some bubbles especially where it lays over a rounded surface.... using a soft rag work this smooth.... putting this outside where some sun warmed it while I did this helped

the pin stripping is cal-strips as you work around the curves do not "strech" it, but gentle lay it around. notice how the pin stripe really highlights the two-tone effect

this will sit for several days before the top coat

Got it. That's called "color sanding".

The results are beautiful.

And I thought that I was the only one with insect marks on a perfect paint! There is only a 9.5 - remember that, and plan results accordingly!

Paint Layers

Did I understand that you are layering urethane clear over laquer? Doesn't that lift the undercoat? I've had a terrible time with lifting on plastic parts. I have used an adhesion promoter, but that lifts the rattle can underlayers on contact. I would love to work with laquer base coats with a urethane clear if it works.

if you have a urethane over a laquer and then try to put a lacquer on it the urethane will lift.... so if I were to totally redo it I would have to remove all of the urethane before I could paint it

going to add a tip here.... I recently used Eastwoods plastic narrow tape for blocking off a pin strip. http://www.eastwood.com/1-8-x36-yd-blue ... m-art.html I AM SOLD! There was absolutely no bleed under the tape like you get with plain masking tape. So whether you are wanting a clean edge just between two colors, or laying a stripe (like in the picture below) it is the way to go. It comes in various widths, and in the picture below it is 1/8". However, you can use it to delineate a broader line as in the second picture.
