Re: Gold Member
Testing the charging and cooling systems.
I can’t get the video to upload, but I was able to get the GL outside to run it for an extended period.
I let it run for 20 or 30 minutes. I wanted to see if the cooling system would maintain temperature, if the charging system maintained voltage, etc.
Everything worked well. The minor fuel leak fixed itself, the water pump initially had a bit of discharge from the weep hole, but that sealed up too. Temperature gauge worked and the fan cycled on and off 4 or 5 times to maintain temperature. Ran it through all the gears on the center stand and that seemed fine (at least with no load).
So far this has been a really easy resurrection
Yesterday I finished cleaning the fuel tank from the parts bike. That was a PITA as usual, but it did come clean and now is coated with 2 stroke oil. It took some work to get the main fuel feed line cleared, but eventually a power washer did the trick.
Hopefully this weekend I’ll get the brakes apart, cleaned, flushed and bled. The rear brakes need to come off to get the fuel tank back in anyway.
Then some reassembly and a good once over to make sure everything is safe and hopefully get an actual test ride in before it all comes apart for cleaning, polishing and paint.

Re: Gold Member
Continue to get lucky with this project. Fuel tank is in, flushed and now full of fresh gas. Installed new clear fuel lines and fuel filter and everything looks good. Bike starts and runs good.
Disassembled, cleaned and reassembled all of the calipers, both master cylinders and all the brake lines. Fortunately the calipers had new or next to new pads so all the pistons are in good shape. One or two had minor pitting, but since they were compressed there is no putting in the sealing areas.
When I left this evening all the brakes were working well, motor is running good pulling fuel from its own gas tank and all the electrical that is hooked up is working. I don’t have a headlight or turn signals right now.
Motor revs well and sounds good. I don’t have the low rpm primary chain rattle I had with my 1976.
Should be able to get a road test in by this weekend

Re: Gold Member
Got it all back together except the headlight and turn signals.
Not sure what I’m going to do about signals, but I have a headlight and ring on order. New timing belts should be here tomorrow.
Took a short ride. Runs and drives good. Has the mid throttle flat spot, but I haven’t done the air jet mod yet. That should take care it it.
Now it’s time to start making her pretty and some mods to make it mine.

Re: Gold Member
Set the pilot air/fuel mixture adjuster screws at 3 turns out from seated. That will make a notable difference. Lots to be gained there.
It complements the air jet mod. you haven't addressed yet. Especially, the initial off-idle acceleration will benefit.
Will make the engine's return-to-idle speed behavior consistently reliable, too.
Although it's a little controversial, set the cold engine intake and exhaust lash clearances at 0.006 inch. That will benefit the full range of engine operating speeds, from idle to full throttle.
important! Do that valves' lash clearance readjustment before performing synchronizing the 4 carburetors' idle speeds.

Re: Gold Member
Thank you. I’ll try that.
I haven’t done any tuning yet. It is exactly how it was set up before just cleaned.
I did put in #40 pilots that I had left over from my 1976.

Re: Gold Member
hmmmm.... I hadn't heard of that increase before. I believe utilizing #38 slow fuel jets is the largest increase that had been mentioned in discussions here in the group.
Installing #40 slow fuel jets vs. the OEM #35 slow fuel jets might stimulate objections from the professional carburetion technicians in the group.

If I remember right I ended up putting #42s in my 76, that’s why I had the 40s left.
Runs really well with the 40s with the exhaust it has and stock other than that.

Thanks!
Waiting on a headlight ring, but figured out I don’t have power to the headlight. I had to leave so didn’t get a chance to dig into it much. I have power in and out of the fuse, but that’s as far as I got,
Hopefully just have to clear out a spider web from the switch

Re: Gold Member
We’ll the no power to the headlight ended up being a bigger pain than I had hoped
Luckily I had a switch from the other bike that had the wires cut off. In the switch I was able to use the hi / low with the contact board and solder the wires into my existing switch wire harness.
It’s tight work in there but it did work and all the electrics now work as they should

Re: Gold Member
My headlight ring did not come in Saturday like it was supposed to. I was a bit bummed because I was hoping to get a real test ride in today, but that did not happen.
I did get my new timing belts from NAPA so I thought it would be a good idea to get them installed before I broke one on my test ride
I hadn’t done that in years and couldn’t remember if you could do it without removing the radiator, but it was no problem. I just removed the 2 bottom bolts and 2 upper acorn nuts that hold the radiator and pulled it forward an inch or so, removed the 4 cover bolts and it was easy to get to.
Now all I need is the headlight ring and hopefully get a test ride in tomorrow

Re: Gold Member
True!
It looks like the belts had been replaced at some point. There was a green sharpy mark on the right side cam gear. That could have been factory but probbly not. Anyway, they needed to be replaced for age if nothing else.
