John was pumping the plunger too fast (likely too far into the bore, also) and the brake fluid in the reservoir couldn't keep up with the demand to purge air out of the master cylinder bore.

see post #11 for his Eureka moment

Slow, very short strokes of the master cylinder piston do the job.
Keep your eyes and ears open and you'll learn something new, everyday. tumb2
