it was incredibly easy...had a local shop press on the lower bearing. Ground down the bottom of the steering neck to almost flush with the race. Knocked out the upper race (the bottom one fit the All Balls bearing, the top did not)...used the old race to get the new one hammered in all the way. Then bolted right up...much less daunting than what I was expecting.Fred Camper wrote:Good progress, the front end seemed to be installed pretty darn quick.

son of a gun!!! just realized the seller on ebay sent me the wrong (but better) front end...I bought a 99-07 Busa front end, but turns out they sent me 06ish GSXR 1000 forks...so now I might have to find a different front wheel...glad I didnt buy the calipers already! Thankfully the bearings still worked...

From what I understand, the GSXR forks are all the same, but the springs are different, so you might not be to far off the Busa front end with what you have.

I like the way that sits with the combo of forks/shocks. Glad you like the avy.

Re: For lack of a better name...GL1100 FITT build
Well dropped the frame off today for the repairs...
This fork mixup is becoming quite the headache. So the ebay ad was for 99-07 hayabusa forks, but i received 03-04 gsxr 1000 forks. Really they are better forks and are set up for radial mount brakes, but since they were advertised as busa forks i bought an 04 hayabusa front wheel and discs.
The busa discs are 320mm, and all the radial mount brakes are 300-310mm. I bought 06 gsxr calipers which are 310mm...so now i need to get spacers or new discs. Obviously the spacers would be cheaper...but all this just because i got the wrong but better forks...
On the plus side, for those looking to do fork conversions you can add another to the list. Looks like if you get either 99-07 hayabusa or 03-04 gsxr 1000 steering neck and triple trees any 50mm fork will work. Im sure with All Balls kits many more are viable options, but for stem length these work with minimal frame grinding.
I guess I'll start some work on the engine and get ready for the FI while the frame is in the shop.
Thanks for following...

Re: For lack of a better name...GL1100 FITT build
Sorry to hear about the forks not totally working out for you. Guess the top halves are the same, but lowers are different.
Have you looked at a set of used rotors for a 1000? I'm assuming the wheel itself is probably the same between the two bikes, but may want to be certain of that as well. Not sure if you want to deal with spacers. Might be cheaper to sell the wheel that you have, and pick up the correct stuff for out front.
Did they do any major changes around the years your parts came from? I know with the Busa stuff, they changed a fair amount in 08... Unsure if newer parts worked on older stuff.
Keep up the good work!

One of the things I love about these motors is the symmetry. Looking forward to seeing the twin turbo's with the associated plumbing in pairs!

Re: For lack of a better name...GL1100 FITT build
Got the whole front end figured out. The hayabusa wheel will work just fine, but I'm getting a proper 03/04 GSXR 1000 wheel. The brake disc spacing and bearing spacing are a few mm bigger on the 'busa wheel, so the axle sticks out a bit. Found a good bit of information that might be useful to others that want to / have swapped the front. Has all the pertinent measurements and compatibility between Suzuki front ends, and was exactly what I needed to sort it all out.

Got the frame back from being fixed...took much less time than I was expecting. Looks pretty good now! I'll be stripping the paint from the frame and taking care of any other rust spots, then I'm thinking truck bedliner for the frame.
Only problem is it looks like he got some spatter in the threads for the swingarm pivot. I got most of it out but there are three that just won't come out! I thought maybe running the pivot bolt through would help but that just messed up the threads on the bolt.
Any ideas?

That is a tap I would not want to buy, but wonder how hard it would be to borrow that one? Or even bring it to someone with one for a very quick fix.

Go to a well stocked machine shop and have them run the matching tap through the hole to "chase" the threads. shouldn't cost much but to buy a tap that large would be expensive and most likely never used again. You just need to know the metric size for the threads.

I'd take a dremel tool with a grinding tip and touch them out while not blasting away too much thread.

I have knocked of weld spatter with a chisel. If you can get in at the proper angle and not damage the threads. Pops right off, not attached that much.

I tried my smallest chisel and cant get the correct angle. Also tried some picks which is how i got most of it out. But these last few arent budging.
Ill check with some local shops.

Ya, chasing it with a tap would be the best, if you can find one.
