I haven't done a single but my thought is that just about any carb can be made to work. It's all about the manifold design. The most power will be with a single carb throat feeding each cylinder. Long runners don't seem to be much of a problem except for some cases of icing on certain manifold designs.

Long runners aren't always bad things.

All fuel systems are a compromise between power, fuel efficiency, ease of use/maintenance and cost. No one system is perfect for all. The manufacture makes the best total compromise, but if you have a different personal preference, then that goes out the window. I have to really feel out what a customer wants when looking to build carburation for an air cooled VW or some hotrod multiple carb setup. It does nobody any good if they love the looks and power of a dual 48 IDA carb setup, but value low end power and fuel economy. That said, pick what area is most important to you and go that direction, understanding that all other areas will be compromised. Hard to beat factory in all areas, easy to beat them in one or two.

Thanks Jake,
I bit the bullet and sent my set of carbs off to Pistol Pete for a complete rebuild. I still like the idea of the single carb and might try it on the next build if I survive this one!
Bikes at present:

And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair
83 GL in process :IDTS:

I do have years of exp W/ VW carbs & let me tell you they are primitive.
I would not run one on my GoldWing.
There are single carb setups that run a 2 barrel Webber.
If I was thinking of going single I would go with that.
