The left muffler almost cleared without modification. I did find it necessary to hammer a slight pocket to clear the rear caliper mounting bolt and the head of the rear axle.
Note that the bike is on the center stand so shocks are fully extended. It was only in this condition that the caliper bolt just touched the muffler. When the bike is off the stand there is plenty of clearance.
Here is a photo of the left muffler mounted on the bike. The center stand is fully up and rests against the rubber stop. The stand is in the same stock position position and ground/cornering clearance is unchanged from original.
You can see that there is extra clearance between the BMW muffler and the stand (compared to the original muffler). It appears possible to gain cornering clearance if you are willing to relocate the center stand stop.
Here is a quick snap of the rear view. You can still see that I have some minor adjustments to do as the right muffler is a little higher then the left.
BTW, this is a bike that I have just started to get back into shape. Since my last post I have run it some more and can report that I am pleased with both the sound and look. And the mounting system is quite solid with no leaks.
Well I think thats a wraps on this project. Given the result, I will probably spring for a new set of BMW replica mufflers to replace the old beater set I used for the mock up.
Hopefully this muffler option will be helpful to someone with their own wing project. And for those still working on their wings, keep going! They are well worth the effort to bring them back!
This is an excellent step-by-step that will, no doubt, help other club members. You've provided some excellent tips and tricks for those mounting any type of muffler.
I hop you don't mind that I've moved this to the How To 4-Wings forum. Well done, Sir.
