I haven't posted in a little while, but I have been making some progress, just nothing too visable.

I have the repairs to the side covers done and some paint being matched and put into spray cans. I got the inspection done for the title and tomorrow I am hoping to get the title transfered, get plates and insure the bike to put me on the right side of the law. :orange

The lower radiator hose arrived a couple days ago (the old one was leaking) and I got that installed today with fresh coolant. I fixed the weeping fuel tank drain plug and went out for a test ride. It ran alright, but still stumbles off the line. It gets better when it is fully warmed up, but there is still a bit there. I'll wait for the temperatures to get closer to normal before I try any adjustments, but I am thinking about Randakk's fix for the jets to the air cut off valve????

After the ride I let it cool down then gave it a quick wash. After that it would barely start and run :( . I got a bit of a poke from the plug wires and then I pulled the boots on the right side, #4 plug hole was completely filled with water. I dried it out, pulled the plug and ran a screw driver through the drain hole. It was packed with looked to be mud. Once I got that cleared I put the plug back in and flushed a bunch of water through there. Then plugged the wires back in and she fired right up. action1

I still get a bit of a poke from the wires so I'm sure it is arching a bit. I am planning on the Dyna S ignition, coils and wires for the riding season, but I wanted to ride the bike stock so I could see if that $300.00 actually made an improvement. Any thoughts?

sos, Well yesterday was March finally, and the temp got above 45, so I took my old gal for a ride. Only went about 10 miles. She rode pretty well, but never got up to temp. SPRING IS COMING, keep up the good work. My bike came with the dyna, so I can not comment about the difference. It is nice not to have to worry about the adjustment though. Ernie

Good weather is coming and I'm getting anxious :-D Well, sort of good weather. So far I've got about 20 miles on the GL since I got it titled and plated. It runs pretty well except right off idle, but that really isn't too bad. I think the warmer temps might help. In the mean time I'm trying to wrap up loose ends.

The only part that I really need now is the front signal stems. Out of all the crap that I have for old Hondas, nothing fits and I don't want to do anything to the bike that can't be undone easily. I installed a new throttle return cable and that did help the idle coming back to normal. The pull cable seems okay, but as soon as that arrives I'll change that out as well.

The clutch makes a nasty rattling sound at idle. It goes away when you pull the clutch lever so I hope it is just weak springs. Anyone had this :?: The starter clutch seems to have cleared itself up. It hasn't slipped in days. I'll keep my fingers crossed because the motor needs to come out to fix that one and I don't want to pull it just for that.

It might need valve stem seals because it smokes on startup, but clears away to nothing after it is warm. Not that big of a deal, but I'll put some more miles on before I decide to do them or not.

Other than that it is just cosmetic. I took one of the radiator shrouds to a buddy at a paint shop to match the color. They can put it in spray cans and hopefully I get the paint tomorrow afternoon. So I've been working on the repairs to the side covers. When I got the bike it was missing the battery cover. I picked one up off ebay, but it had some issues.

Image

The major issue was a crack at the top, but it also had some deep scratches and a melted spot. I drilled an arresting hole to stop the crack from propagating and then used the trusty JB Weld as body filler.

Image

The right side cover also had some holes drilled in it so I'm taking care of them at the same time.

Image

Hopefully tomorrow I will have them painted crossy.gif

Common plumbing fittings will serve as mounting stems and be easily replaced if you find some later.
Most wings smoke on a startup if not used frequently, especially if left on the sidestand.
Most wings have the starter clutch slip in the cold or with thick oil.
Odds are fair the rattle might be the primary chain which would mean carbs are not correct or unsynced. Not a big worry i'd think.

Good tip on the plumbing fittings. I've synced the carbs with a manometer after each change and they are all within a couple mm on the scale. I do have some coil / wire issues though. Maybe something there. Also, I have not checked the timing since I did the timing belts.

Thanks!

Here are a couple pics. Now I'm really down to buffing out the side covers a bit and putting the front signals on. The signal stems should arrive today.

It has been a long time since I updated this thread, but I have been riding my GL1000. I just thought I'd throw an update up.

It has been a great bike and although I have had other projects and interests that have drawn me away from the GL, every time I go back to it I am reminded how much fun it is to ride.

Here is how it sits today.

Image

Image

Since the last post I have added the stainless steel caliper pistons and new stainless lines. The stock exhaust has been replaced by the jardine 4 into 2, The Dyna ignition, coils and wires, superbike bars with bar-end mirrors, Continental tires (ready to be replaced again), Carbs have been rejetted including a Randakk air jet mod that really helped smooth out the power.

It has had the usual cable and battery replacements, but other than that it has been a really sturdy and dependable bike. I really like the power and the gearing. The one thing that I have wanted to add was a power outlet and GPS mount. That is what made me thing of posting here again.

So here it is:

I wanted to mount the GPS inside the fairing and above the gauges. I run the same setup on my V-strom and I like to be able to glance at the screen without looking away from the road. There is not much real estate there to put a bracket and a power outlet, so I himed and hawed from quite a while before I finally just took off the fairing and started looking through the scrap steel metal.

It turn out that the 2 screws that hold the back cover of the instrument indicator lights thread into a metal bracket and provide good support for a GPS mount.

Image

Image

This wouldn't work if I did not already have the fairing to conceal the plate and the power outlet, but in this case it seems to work out.

I made the plate out of 16 gauge plate, just cut to fit and bent over the edge of the work bench. Now I needed to fit in a power outlet to get 12 volts to the GPS.

Image

It is close fit to clear the gauges, GPS and the fairing and I found I needed to modify the lower part of the fairing to get it to fit.

Image

Image

There were a couple of fittings to get it to work, but here is the end.

Image

Image

Image

Now f it can get me to my Son's baseball game tomorrow I will call it a success :-D

Four years since last post, yikes, that's awesome.
I'm glad I waited to plumb my power supply I just bought, and I was wondering also where to put my digital voltage gauge. I never thought about going to the windscreen. Thanks SOS!
