That's some pretty ugly stuff...good testament about the fuel filter though. Do you have access to ethanol free fuel?

Ugh. I'm not liking that! I RedCoted the tank in the 1100 I'm working on now. Hopefully I don't have similar issues...

Another Long HOT day in the shop but worth every drop of sweat.

IT LIVES!!!!

Still lots to do. I figure about 2 more days in the shop before the first ride. Need to set the timing, adjust the valves, do a couple engine oil and rad flushes, synch carbs and then install the fairing etc etc...

I did find a couple nasty cracks back on the tail piece web. Cracked on each side. Can only be from me over loading the rear top box with my tools and such. Will have to address that this next winter.

WF it sounds great and you say you haven't adjusted the valves or timed it?
You really went to town. I did video of my rig today also.
I'm hung up on the Head lamp and the body work is out.

I just stuck the dyna in there and it fired right up. I did loosen it up and watching the vibration of the mirrors I got it to smooth out a bit. I have one of Randakks Timing wheels and will do that before it hits the road. Not sure where I am going to set it though. This is a 77 engine with a 78 carb rack and 78 advancer. So I am going to have to think on that some. The valves I set when I built it but they will need a tweak before I ride it for the first time. They were removed and new seals put in and lapped so they need to seat some. That electric fuel pump worked nice. First cold start I cranked for maybe 5 seconds before she fired. Now it is touch the button.

It was 93 in the shop today and they are calling for 95 tomorrow so I might get out for a few hours but I am not up for another full day. If I get her on the road by the end of the week I will be happy.

Not close by. The nearest station is about 40 miles away. I normally go out there a couple times a year and get like 15 gallons and I use that for all my small engine stuff but it is too far to use in the bike on a regular basis.

Did the valves first thing this morning, then the timing. With 78 Carbs and a 78 Advancer and 77 Cams I decided on 7.5 degrees for the baseline. Basically half way between the early and late profiles. She seems happy so far.

Then I drained out the first distilled water flush and moved the rad out so I could adjust the right hand tensioner. I think I had it too tight and that is why it was complaining. While I had the rad loose I Installed the belt covers and the supports for the fairing. Buttoned all that up and moved on to the Carb synch

It wasn't out by much but I spent some time on it and got it pretty close.

And here is a video of the cracks on the back web

Up to 96 outside now so that is it for today. Sweat dripping in the eyes continuously makes it hard to do anything constructive.

Never thought it would crack there. I'm going to look mine over. I think you'd like the 77 advancer, although you probably drive this one with more loads. C5 with VOES.

Yea swapping out the advancer is an easy thing to do. Once I get her on the road and see how she responds then I will decide if I want to play with it. This is a dressed over the road bike so economy and longevity is really more of a concern than speed performance. IIRC the advance for the 78 was like 5 degrees less at full. I suspect that could have a bigger impact on the cam performance than the carbs but I am just guessing. A little concerned she might run lean and maybe enough to have some knocking. Too many variables for me to figure in my head so I will have to experiment a bit while riding it.

I know when I checked the advance operation today with the strobe it did not quite hit the full mark for the 75 profile timing wheel I used and I had set the baseline at about 7.5 BTDC as opposed to the stock setting of 5 for that engine.

The more I look at this and think about it those cracks show up where you would expect for a bike that is overloaded. The shocks would push those tail piece extensions up but the weight of the top box I think would push them down?? I carry a lot of stuff but I did not think it was that much. 99% of the time I ride solo and even when she is aboard the Better Half is not a big girl.

I know for the rest of the year my tools will be in the side boxes or in the seat behind me.

Unfortunately the temp does not show the heat index of the humidity NW OK is very humid and so the temp may be 100, but the humidity makes it feel like 110 (when the sweat is rolling down the end of your cap a 10 am)

sort of like the humidity in San Francisco, makes the summer 55 feel like the low 40's (the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco)

back to the thread.... that is some pile of er, stuff, n the tank. Gotta love that humidity in Norfolk

Well she rides! First ten miles down. Had to jump inside to check the radar. Can hear boomers starting up but it looks like I can sneak out for a bit.
