Re: '72 CB350 cafe "resto-mod"
I have a '70 CB450 that belongs to a friend which I've stripped as the crank floats left to right by about 2mm, a PO rebuilt this motor and messed up a couple of things. I think they put the crank back without some thrust washers and that's why it floats side to side. Not having dissasembled it it the first place, not sure if it is salvageable even if I can get the missing washers because I don't have the original factory measurements for the throws any more.
Pity, cos the bike itself is in really nice condition.

Re: '72 CB350 cafe "resto-mod"
The CB450's are very cool and keep increasing in value.
As an option; you might think about getting a used crankshaft. There's a few on eBay and it wouldn't hurt to try the Honda Twins site.
Did a little research. The crankshaft assembly is the same as these years & models. Good luck!

Thanks for the info Ray!
I've signed up with the Honda Twins forum, but haven't asked the questions there yet.
Unfortunately getting the cranks on eBay shipped to SA will be impossibly expensive.

Re: '72 CB350 cafe "resto-mod"
Went a different route with the oil filter. The stock unit is a centrifugal type.
Was never a big fan, so with some research; found this jewel!

It did require some minor modifications.
A hole had to be drilled in the side cover.

The stock filter had to be cut or machined down to 22mm. Makes room for the new filter, and acts as a spacer for the gears, washers and nut.

Here's a shot of it installed. Will probably polish it after the first oil change.

Cleaned & lubed the advance, installed the points, and wired them in.

Much better than the centifugal one IMO. Will look nice if you polish it after 1st oil change.

Re: '72 CB350 cafe "resto-mod"
Thanks guys!
Lots of yard work, so not much happening in the shop.
Found these

On the bike

Won't be using the kick starter (for now. needs to be extended, more fab work)
Instead of leaving the shaft bare; made a couple of covers. Probably go with the right one.

Getting closer to having a hydraulic clutch

Thanks, really enjoying this project

Got a tip from one of the members on the VJMOG site. Contacted the owner, we agreed on a price, two days later they were in the mailbox. Very, very fortunate to have them!Norbert R wrote:Ray those finned cam covers are THE BUSINESS !!

Well you've certainly done them justice, motor looks fabulous with them on and all polished
