I used an aftermarket seat for a sportster, works great if you don't mind the top of the gas tank being a little exposed. if i ever get permission to post pictures, i'll pop some up there for ya.

Customizing my new project

#36

Post by tbcycle »

Just got a 1200 and got it started. will be adding a Yamahammer Warrior tank for a false tank, wider low slung bars, custom seat, maybe a rune style headlight and custon Omaha orange paint for the frame and will black out the block and heads. will also add chrome to accent, not to drown the effect. I intend to simplify this bike as much as possible. This is my 14 1/2 year old sons first bike (of his own) and he is the one that wants the colors and seat combo. I will be riding it off and on until he gets his license, but he will get to "try it out" occasionally. As soon as I can post pics, I will post pics of the build. NOTE: I will be moving from Minnesota in june or July, so this must be complete by then. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I inherited the 1981 GL1100 Interstate (with Voyager trike kit) from my stepfather. I sold the trike kit, gave him the check and, in turn, I received the title to the GL. The bike was mechanically sound, but the fibergalss and chrome was not in the best shape. But I had a plan!

I stripped everything "Interstate" or chrome off the bike, placed them on Ebay, and netted $850. From there, I started buying bits and pieces to make it my own, including Tomaselli clip-ons, aftermarket gages, shorty mirrors, standard headlight, Lucas-style taillight, Dunstall-replica shorty slip-ons, new Progressive fork springs and rear shocks, new tires, fuel pump, and battery, handbuilt rear cowl (from another GL tank cover), salvage Honda pegs, reshaped and recovered stock seat, and flat black "rattlecan" paint. Thus the "rocker" theme. The really cool thing is, in addition to the Ebay profits, I got the GL on the road and running for two Bens! Yup, 200 bucks!

Since the photos, I have re-rattlecanned the whole thing the same finish flat black, and recovered the seat in black pseudo-leather. My next task is to clean/rebuild the carbs. I have a sputter during an off-idle roll on at less than full throttle, and at idle the exhaust pressures are noticeably different side-to-side. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I spent the last 2 years working at the local Honda dealership and the guys in service were shooting the breeze one day. One of the more "colorful" guys stated, "that bike's too big to be a cafe racer! It's more like a buffet racer!" The name stuck!

Greetings,
So, do you want to see pictures as I lop the entire front end off my 1100 Interstate on the way to a reverse trike?
Imagine a marriage of a Wing, a TriMagnum and an Aptera.....and you are close.....
Cheers,
Joe Petty

Oh god yes, pics please! You will need to make more posts first, but you can make that happen pretty easily. Start a new thread on the reverse trike so you can post pics and build info and such.

Greetings,
Bought it last Friday, it was delivered about noon on Sunday.
Had it stripped to start working on carbs by Sunday evening. Ended up pulling both heads on Monday.
Have to do valve job, timing belts, clean tank/fuel system and carb overhaul to get it running first.
Took initial measurements last night also for all existing frame points to calculate proper cut points, etc.
I have been "building" this project for about 9 months already doing research, etc.
Bought TriMagnum plans for the fiberglass body information and a few other pointers.

This should be a fun project!
Cheers,
Joe Petty

Greetings,
OK, I am still in de-construction mode right now, removing Interstate and other "non-Trike" stuff. Still have the heads off but got gaskets and will do valve job this week and reassemble that part. New timing belts should be here by Wed. Need to clean/rebuild carbs and hear it make motor noises _BEFORE_ I start in earnest, then coat gas tank and reinstall.

I have some web space available on my server so I will start a page for it to share all the bloody knuckle stories and pics. Already have some plans started based loosely on a TriMagnum and styled after an Aptera. Also have a couple of pages of notebook paper with point-to-point measurements and notes that I will take photos of....but they are just basic napkin drawings!
Cheers,
Joe Petty
