I inherited the 1981 GL1100 Interstate (with Voyager trike kit) from my stepfather. I sold the trike kit, gave him the check and, in turn, I received the title to the GL. The bike was mechanically sound, but the fibergalss and chrome was not in the best shape. But I had a plan!
I stripped everything "Interstate" or chrome off the bike, placed them on Ebay, and netted $850. From there, I started buying bits and pieces to make it my own, including Tomaselli clip-ons, aftermarket gages, shorty mirrors, standard headlight, Lucas-style taillight, Dunstall-replica shorty slip-ons, new Progressive fork springs and rear shocks, new tires, fuel pump, and battery, handbuilt rear cowl (from another GL tank cover), salvage Honda pegs, reshaped and recovered stock seat, and flat black "rattlecan" paint. Thus the "rocker" theme. The really cool thing is, in addition to the Ebay profits, I got the GL on the road and running for two Bens! Yup, 200 bucks!
Since the photos, I have re-rattlecanned the whole thing the same finish flat black, and recovered the seat in black pseudo-leather. My next task is to clean/rebuild the carbs. I have a sputter during an off-idle roll on at less than full throttle, and at idle the exhaust pressures are noticeably different side-to-side. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I spent the last 2 years working at the local Honda dealership and the guys in service were shooting the breeze one day. One of the more "colorful" guys stated, "that bike's too big to be a cafe racer! It's more like a buffet racer!" The name stuck!
