no.... I meant the part that holds the brake pads.... the thing you bleed off when you bleed the brakes... that is the brake cylinder

So everyone is on the same page:
Brake master cylinder - the part at the handlebars that gets actuated by the right lever
Junction block - the part that the line from the master goes to so that it can split off into two lines at the wheel
Brake caliper - Also sometimes incorrectly called wheel cylinder. The thing that holds the pads and contains the piston that actuates the pads
Brake caliper piston - the part of the caliper that is moved by fluid pressure when the master cylinder is compressed
Wheel cylinder - Brake servo for hydraulic drum brakes
Bleeder nipple - the little valve that allows you to remove air or brake fluid from the system
Brake rotor - also disk, the part that the pads squeeze

okay... but you forgot the bracket that actual holds the thing you are calling the caliper... it is that bracket which is specific to 75-77 and 78-9 forks.... which is part #21 in this picture

Yes:
Brake caliper bracket - part that holds the caliper to the fork. On some motorcycle models (all GLs) this bracket contains a sliding mechanism that must be lubed for proper operation. They may look similar from year to year, but are not necessarily the same.

When putting comstars on 75-77 you can simply shim the caliper brackets so that they move the caliper inward enough so that the caliper straddles the rotor properly. You still have to deal with the speedo on the wrong side, though.

Okay, I am getting this. The shims should do the trick.

As far as the speedo goes, will it need replacing? Or can I just reroute a cable to the opposite side?

The speedo drive is on the wrong side of the wheel, so there will be no tang on the fork to hold it. You can figure something out, I am sure. And no, you can't run the wheel backwards cause it will drive the speedo the wrong way.

Moose, now I understand! That is probably what drives the fork lowers replacement. And when you replace the fork lowers, you have changed the caliper bolt spacing, so you need new calipers...

So, to the audience writ large, any creative ideas on the speedo (without replacing the fork lowers, calipers, rotors, etc.)?

peteybug, how did you resolve the issue?

I would use a piece of strapping or something wrapped around the fork leg with 2 bumps to register the speedo drive tang. But, I dunno cause I have not done mine yet (though I probably will not because I will be running different forks altogether.)

You have to replace:

1 wheel
2 brake rotors (unless you think you can drill a 5 bolt hole pattern in exactly the right place)
3 speedometer drive assembly (at the wheel)

Then shims on the caliper brackets and your done.

The tang (or lug as the honda manual refers to it) are for the 75 to 77 models only according to the manual page 13-34 and my visual observations of 2 78 and 1 75 front ends. The 78-79 do not have tangs on the forks or the speedometer drive assembly, so don't sweat it. Use the same cable, routed to the other side of the wheel, and the same speedometer.

roncar,

Doh! [slaps own forehead...]

Of course I have to replace the rotors. I flubbed that earlier message because, um, the sun was in my eyes. Yeah. That's it. The sun...

Thanks!

And good luck finding a seat rail for a 77, the early ones are hard to get. You might consider a little later one if you don't mind relocating the turn signals.
