86 Aspy questions

#1

Post by ritalz »

Two questions about minor problems that don't want to go away. One is the amount of heat under the shelter that makes the outer surface of the shelter very warm to the touch. The fans cycle as they should and the temp gauge stays right about three bars. I'm fortunate to have adjustable wings to direct airflow inwards while moving. Just seems like there is not enough airflow to move the heat away from the rider. The other item is the left mirror will not stay in adjustment. Constantly have to adjust it outwards. Is there something inside that can be tightened?
Bike has settled in pretty good. Still some light popping in the 2200 to 2800 rpm range. I'm waiting for some cooler weather to check the carb sync and slides. It's not bad enough for me to want to pull the rack.

This one is pretty much all stock so I assume it is there. I'll try to get a look sometime today to be sure.

Are you saying that you think the engine is running too hot?
or
that you are actually suprised that the fairing is holding in heat?

Pretty sure the air dam is there but cannot se it with all the plastic in place. It's too hot out right now to take it apart.

Gauge says the engine temps are only at three bars running.

The surprise is how hot the shelter feels to the touch. I may have to pull the shelter to verify a clear air path.

One thing to keep an eye on is that the voltage regulator is in the shelter and the excessive heat will damage or kill it. I had an 86 Sei that I bought from my neighbor and after I bought it, it quit charging. I figured that the notorious 1200 failing stator had come to visit. After I bought it of course !

So I called Rick’s Motorsports and talked to Rick himself,, he said that he didn’t believe it was the stator because the Sei & LTD use a different stator than the normal 1200 and he’d never seen one of those fail, ever..

So he gave me a list of things to check believing it had to be the regulator because of the heat and lack of airflow around it . And sure enough it was the Regulator, compounding things was that the regulator was just buried under wiring so it got really hot.. I cleared things away so it got better airflow and replaced it with a Rick’s MOSFET regulator, never another problem and the voltage was way more stabile. The regulator is located under the left rear corner of the shelter, might be worth a look..
