Dumb question: Removing cylinder head
I need to replace my RH head gasket. I’ve checked the manual and searched the forums but I’m not coming up with a clear diagram or answer. Do I need to remove the pulley to be able to remove the head? At this point I’ve got all bolts on the head pulled but I have a sinking feeling that the cam shaft is bolted to the pulley and will have to be removed.

Re: Dumb question: Removing cylinder head
Cam and pulley come off with the head. Don't forget there is a 10mm bolt on the underside.

Re: Dumb question: Removing cylinder head
That’s what I was afraid of. It’s not a big deal, I’ve done the belts before. I assume it’s: drop the radiator, remove cover, mark the pulley, loosen the tensioner, then unbolt?

Re: Dumb question: Removing cylinder head
It might be a good idea to spin the motor so the marks on the pulleys line up with the marks on the engine, but apart from that yeah, you're good.

Yes, good point. I’d like to be able to put it all back with minimal adjusting so not starting at a random point is smart.Lucien Harpress wrote: ↑Mon Jun 02, 2025 6:17 pm It might be a good idea to spin the motor so the marks on the pulleys line up with the marks on the engine, but apart from that yeah, you're good.

Re: Dumb question: Removing cylinder head
Make sure the mounting surfaces are spotlessly clean and once you have it all back together and run a couple of heat cycles go back and retorque the head bolts.

Re: Dumb question: Removing cylinder head
Got the head pried off and this is what I found

Obviously by the steam cleaned cylinder I was correct that #3 was the leaky culprit.

Re: Dumb question: Removing cylinder head
I’m gonna have to get some gasket cleaner. The residue is caked on. I’m taking my time and slowly scraping it off, not gonna use power tools.

Re: Dumb question: Removing cylinder head
Yup. Only thing that jumped out of me was it was probably the read cylinder that blew the head gasket, huh? Coolant in the combustion chamber makes an excellent steam cleaner.
(Now'd be the time to do valve guide seals and a valve lap if you're so inclined, but not necessary if she ran good before.)

Re: Dumb question: Removing cylinder head
Yep, definitely leaking into the #3 cyl. Don’t loose that easy to misplace oil restriction (the little metal plug with the o’ring) you have to have it.

Re: Dumb question: Removing cylinder head
Any advice on getting that stuck locator pin out? At this point I'm going to have to get a new one from trying to wrench on it.

Re: Dumb question: Removing cylinder head
I have good luck using the back end of a drill bit that that fits snugly into the pin and wriggling it out. If it's already last the point of re-use, then I use a channel- lock pliers and the drill bit, which keeps it from collapsing. A wood dowel works, too...sickradsean wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 7:59 pm Any advice on getting that stuck locator pin out? At this point I'm going to have to get a new one from trying to wrench on it.

Here is a link to a YT video showing how I removed old, stuck on head gasket material on my 76 restoration. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMjWrOP ... 42&index=9sickradsean wrote: ↑Thu Jun 05, 2025 7:37 pm I’m gonna have to get some gasket cleaner.
