An expensive fix for a relatively minor problem. (in my opinion). A lot of things were done. Perhaps only one actually solved the problem. Goldwing specs are already pretty tight, so maybe the design of the oiling system could be examined.

Thank you. I am certain that boring/honing the cylinders to the minimum piston clearance and using the aftermarket pistons are the reasons this was successful. I hope this thread inspires others to do this too. I know most of you are surprised that it worked or at least made a significant difference. I didn't know if it would work or not, but I had to try.

I might add, this should be a nice engine for the BOY (Bike of the Year). I replaced all the chains in the engine including the hard to find oil pump chain.

I received my new motorcycle OTC 5604 gauge and I really like it. I tested all four cylinders and all of them measured 130 +- 2 pounds. I trust this gauge. My valves are set to factory specifications, .004. I believe the compression will increase over time.

Cliff asked me to set the valves to .006 but I think that is a bit too much; however, I will set them to .005 to see if the compression increases. This should prove or disprove this theory. My compression tests were done with the carbs removed.

On another note regarding rebuilding these engines. After reassembly, it is very important to run it for 30 minutes or so and then clean the the oil screen. I don't care how clean you think you have kept the parts, the screen will always have lint and other junk on it from exposing the parts to your garage. This is the main reason I like to start the engine before putting it back on the motorcycle. Getting to the oil screen on a GL1000 while it is in the frame is a PITA.

Good advice. The first 1000 I ever rebuilt lasted about100 miles. When I tore it down the screen was packed with shop rag stuff. Rookie mistake. Has never happened since, Lesson learned

That was a good experiment. I set the valves to .005 and my compression went up from 130 to 140.
