I've got another goldwing that needs the water pump replaced.
I got to looking at this seal setup in the oil pump and wondered "What exactly does this seal do"?
The o ring that surrounds it seals the pump from the inside of the engine,
the water pump has a sealed bearing.
The only thing I can think is that it might seal the waterpump shaft to help pressurised oil
from reaching the waterpump ball bearings and blowing out the weep hole.
I never thought about it before.

Re: Oil Pump seal
I think you are correct, reduce pressure is the goal.

Y'all are slacking
I figured that one of you gurus would have responded with the specs, purpose of, and a diagram explaining
the design of the oil pump.
If it is this seal that keeps the oil from coming out of the weep hole,
I wonder how many working water pumps have been replaced because this seal failed.

Re: Oil Pump seal
Not much help here Don, but as far as the weep hole goes I’ve only ever seen coolant come out of it which is generally considered a coolant pump failure. And most of the pumps I’ve replaced have a cracked or broken OE Bakelite impeller which is a shame as I think the Bakelite impeller design should be more efficient than the stamped steel replacement piece. Not a big fan of the Bakelite because it breaks but the impeller is a better design imho.
Anyway, not much help on your seal question but I think you probably are correct

Interesting question! I too have only seen coolant leaks, but.........redglbx wrote: ↑Sun May 25, 2025 6:57 am Not much help here Don, but as far as the weep hole goes I’ve only ever seen coolant come out of it which is generally considered a coolant pump failure. Maybe the initial advice to 'leaking pump people' is to change out the seal first and see if that cures it. A lot quicker, easier and cheaper if it does.

Re: Oil Pump seal
I think that seal provides water pump protection from oil that gets into the cavity from the oil pump itself. Some seepage must occur around the oil pump shaft and this seal would prevent the oil from getting to the water pump via the shaft.
The O-Ring fitted around the cavity hole and mates with the water pump keeps oil from entering around the water pump housing.
This whole design is bad. Everything has to be perfect to prevent leaks.
