GL1200 fan shroud

#1

Post by PNWRider »

Couldn't find an 84 GL1200 Standard near by so I decided to build one. Purchased an 87 low mileage Interstate which I'm removing everything not necessary. What's the purpose of the shroud directly behind the fan? Will the bike run fine without it? Thanks

Like all fan shrouds, it helps direct air across the radiator. Depending on the air temperature, and speed the bike is moving, or not moving, it may or may not be needed.

Here on the East Coast with high temps and HEAVY Traffic it is a solid requirement to keep things at proper temp.

I think he is talking about the shroud in front of the carbs. That would be behind the fan. More to keep heat away from the carbs I believe.

But maybe I'm on the wrong track. anim-cheers1

Thanks for your responses. Specifically, the shroud directly in front of the carbs. Maybe keep the heat off carbs. I'm thinking that at 35mph or greater shouldn't be a problem and would look much better. Any members have experience on removing the secondary air system? Thanks again for the help!

There are some posts around here on removing the SAS. I haven't done it yet but likely will on the upcoming 84. To accomplish, you need to plug the holes underneath the intake runners. This can be done with either a plug or cutting the tube off the current piece that routes into the SAS and welding it shut. That is the route I'm planning to take. The other piece that would need to be fabricated is a blockoff plate where the SAS system feeds back into the intake manifold. Then just a gasket or RTV to seal.

Here is one of the posts that give some good detail on the procedure, with pictures:
