One week shy of a month later and I finally got around to fixing this. Threw a new coil in the head and did a 90 mile test run. So far zero leaks.

Things to do are adjust the handlebars out some more, Lube the noisy speedo cable (again) and investigate/ fix the sloppy sidestand. Speedo cable may be an issue. Speedometer is jumping all over the place and screaming pretty bad.

I keep adding to the list but overall it is getting shorter. action1 action1 action1

Graphite on the cable could cure it.

Did some work and rode her 2 more days. Just shy of a 1,000 miles now since I got her. Runs great and the leaks are all fixed. Handlebars are abut the right position but the angle is still wrong for me. They force me to turn my wrists out and I do not like it. Really aggravates the carpal issues. I prefer my wrists to be straight. So I will probably fuss with that some more then swap the bars out. I have several sets of early bars to choose from.

Removed the side stand and inspected everything. The mount hole in the removable frame section is wallowed out some and that is the source for most of the play. i got it reinstalled and torqued it up tight and it is marginally better. The removable frame section seems solid.

The speedometer has settled and is not jumping around now after a good cable soak in Gear oil. But the speedo itself has a nasty howl. The rubber grommet for the trip meter reset is missing so I stuck a straw for some silicone spray in there. Gave it 3 short bursts of spray, one high, one middle, and one low. First round helped some and the second round of spray helped some more but there is still a unfriendly noise coming from it. I will try some more spray but I really suspect I will be forced to replace it before long. Once I get down under 20 mph and the wind noise is low I can hear the speedo clearly.

Just taking a quick look at the part numbers and I think it is possible a late 1000 speedo is the same?? The 1200 is 37200-MG9-671 and a 78 is 37200-431-671 Outwardly they look the same. Pretty sure I have a few 1000 speedo's to choose from. The tach is different as it has the overdrive indicator light in it.

went back out to the shop this afternoon. I did some more troubleshooting on the speedo and I am fairly certain it is the bushing where the cable hooks up that was squealing. I had a spare cable and operated it with a drill and was able to duplicate it and then eliminate it with some penetrant. I do not know if it will stay gone or not.

Then I dismantled the handlebars. Got the others mounted and was hooking up the controls when Wifey called me in for supper. I think these are 78 bars. They are shorter and have more angle on the ends which straightens out my wrist. Will get a pic up in a minute

The ones closest are the set that came on the bike. They are the bars that were forcing my wrists into an uncomfortable position. The one furthest away are the set I am installing.

I have a spare '84 STD speedo for ya. No charge, as you do so much for the club.
I think I have your address, but please PM me.
Looks much better than the picture shows. Even has the reset grommet!
Haven't see it in action on a bike, but with a drill I can get it to 40mph and no noise.

Finished mounting up the new bars and got our for a short ride of about 50 miles. Too hot to spend any serious time out there. Hand/ wrist position is very much improved. Now that I know they will be staying on I will install a new set of grips. The throttle tube looks to be about an inch too long for the grips I have so some trimming may be necessary. The bars I put on are I think 78 model and they are maybe 2 inches shorter than the originals. I have some risers and may use those but will have to source the proper bolts first. They definitely changed the feel of the bike.

Good news is that the speedo was quiet!

Got the throttle tube cut down and had to trim the bars themselves a bit. I finished everything up a couple days ago and got the new grips on. Got out for a 100 miles this morning and all is good! The new Bars are much more comfortable. Had a chance at a nice straight road when passing a truck out in the country. I let off at 115 indicated and she was still accelerating hard. Bike is nice and stable at any speed. Speedo is being quiet right now but I have the one Wog sent just in case.

180 mile run today and she is running great. I did another fuel economy check and it came out to 39 and change. Considering a fair amount of that ride was 80 mph I am pretty happy with that.
