!975 Spoke Nipples

#1

Post by redbike »

Hi Guys,
A simple question. What was the original color of the spoke nipples on a 1975 GL? I see silver and yellow or gold, both say in the listings they are factory original replacements. David Silver has both as well.
Thanks in advance, Ken

As I don't have a '75, I will make an assumption... the '76 LTD has 'gold' rims, and is the only year and model to have them. My '76 has silver nipples, as does the '77 parts bike I had (IIRC). I would thus assume that the '76 LTD was the only year and model that might have had 'gold' nipples...

When I rebuilt my '75, I had the spokes plated w/zinc and the nipples w/nickel. Dunno where I got the info but I was led to believe that was original.

What I know about spoked wheels.

When I put the spoke wheels on my 78 I tore them down and sent the rims and hubs out for powdercoat.
In the meantime, since the spokes were kind of grungy I polished them. How was I supposed to know you can't polish cadmium plating? One year later they were completely rusted because I had polished all the cadmium off. Feckin' Idjit.

So I bit the bullet and got chrome spokes. Two years later they were completely rusty because although I bit the bullet, it was a little bullet. I just didn't spend enough.

Now it has polished stainless spokes and I never want to lace another wheel ever again.

They are silver. Pretty much. Kind of.
