Re: Timing sight glass
That is very hard to measure. On my 78 (dyna ignition and coils) I did notice a slightly smoother idle but it was a very minor change. On the 75 (Stock Ignition) I was able to dial it in a lot tighter and really work the split timing so it was dead on. It idles very nicely now but I could not really tell a "go fast" type performance difference.

Re: Timing sight glass
Sorry for the slight hi-jack, but I have a more general question regarding the Timing sight glass. My bike came with a timing sight glass installed, but no standard access plug. Is there any reason why I shouldn't run the bike with the timing sight glass in place all the time? I can't see why that might be a problem, but I have overlooked plenty of stuff before!
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Timing sight glass
i ran a site glass installed in cyborg for a long time, and had no problem. i removed it and went back to the stock plug, because with the dyna it did not need checking as often, and i was concerned that the glass might start leaking. it never did, but i really didn't need it installed

Re: Timing sight glass
@honestmann - I use electronic ignition, Dyna coils and static timing only, then advance the timing for performance.
If you want that extra boost advance the time... just not too far.
I'm the guy who tried to time my bike with the plug out and no glass... what a mess! if you find a cost effective sightglass alternative then give us the details.

Re: Timing sight glass
In the past I used about a 6 inch section of 1" pvc. Sand down on end into a slight taper and it will just about screw into the opening. Any oil that splashes up hits the insides of the tube and runs right back into the case. It is a bit of a challenge getting both the strobe and eyeballs lined up but it can be done and it is cheap!

Re: Timing sight glass
On my 76, it was very noticeable but mine was a different case because the F/T1 and F/T2 marks particularly the F/T2 marks on the flywheel were marked wrong which caused my bike to really thrash at idle due to the cylinder pairs fighting each other. My bike had done this from new, only took me 40yrs to figure it out.
Now let me add that this is a pretty remote possibility as I have checked a number of other bikes for this and mine is the only one I have found. (Of course
)
On the static vs dynamic timing there is a noticeable difference particularly since the static timing tends to over advance the timing 6-10 degrees. Dynamic timing will make for a smoother running bike and helps to make sure the cylinder pairs are better sync’d to each other. Plus, since you are using the degree wheel to set your timing it takes any possibility of a mismarked flywheel out of the picture. I only dynamically set the timing anymore, just much better. My .02

Re: Timing sight glass
I made one the lathe out of plexiglass, but timing with the light didn't get it any closer than careful manual setting.
