Shorter handlebars

#1

Post by Brentt4 »

So I’m finding the handlebars a little too tall on my 84 standard. Any recommendations?

Any 7/8" bar (aftermarket or from another bike) will bolt on. Just find something you like. Without a motorcycle salvage yard nearby, this can be quite a project, though, and you can end up with a pile of unwanted bars. And all the cables and hoses will be too long.

Loosen the clamps and tilt the bars 'down' … ie, closer to you a bit

On GL1000s I usually swap out to "Euro" bars. I've also picked up bars at Barber Vintage Festival swap meet. The only extra cable problem for me is the clutch, and I loop that over the top of the air cleaner.

Early 1000 bars are a couple inches shorter. Late 1000 bars are the same height but a different angle.

Yepper the 75-76 bars were shorter with a slightly different angle, except for the 76LTD which started the higher mini ape thing.

When I bought my 76 the 77’s had just been introduced and they had the mini apes, I really wanted those and Honda really promoted them as a “comfort” improvement but the cables and wires going through them put me off of doing that along with the need to replace all the cables with longer ones. After I got my 76 LTD and rode it I find I prefer the shorter bars. I don’t know what the European bars are compared to the 75-76 bars but have thought about changing my 76’s to something a bit flatter, but quite frankly that’ll be something for the next owner to worry about. I bought some cb 750k handlebars from partsnmore and I like them on the goldwing. But I also have a 2” handlebar riser from Amazon with them.

It doesn't matter which way you go...
You can be high styling

Or you can be low riding...

Either way - it's gonna need cables.
