Re: Big Red, the "Parts Bike"
She is looking good for sure. Great progress. Might look at valve clearance if you still have that side to side issue.

The next day I get in the garage, I will go through valve lash. Thanks. I assume carbs should be re synced after that?Fred Camper wrote: ↑Sat Dec 09, 2023 6:56 pm She is looking good for sure. Great progress. Might look at valve clearance if you still have that side to side issue.

Re: Big Red, the "Parts Bike"
Mostly all together. I have a couple loose ends and details to attend to. Still get a little popping at idle and decel. Wondering if the straight through HD mufflers, and lack of cross over could be related.
Even with the flat seat and low bars, it's actually a comfortable ride

Looks Great!
Did the same handlebars and other cosmetics. Changed the exhaust and also now have the popping at deceleration and Idle after warm. Let us know how it goes. ( I also have to do a carb sync)

Re: Big Red, the "Parts Bike"
Nice work!
FWIW, I had the same exhaust setup on my '76, no crossover, etc and had no issues. These engines are fairly immune to changes opening up the exhaust. My 2 cents...

Re: Big Red, the "Parts Bike"
I recall that bike and it sounded great.
I've gone back through carburetors. Verified valve lash. Reaffirmed carburator synchronization and timing.
It does have new points/condenser as well.
I did notice a tiny spark in the points but very minimal. I am considering trying another condenser.

Re: Big Red, the "Parts Bike"
Condensor are cheap. Worth a try. My 78 is still going strong, even with half a million miles on it, but is currently going thru a "freshening up". Mostly cosmedic.
