Clutch Chatter

#1

Post by Dirty Dave »

I've noticed that the clutch on my 97 Valkyrie with 60K miles on it chatters
a bit upon take off from a standstill. Nailing it while moving, I haven't noticed
slippage.

Is it time to do maintenance?

Thanks. 2000 miles on the oil. Only ever replaced fluid in reservoir every 2 years after draining.

Will bleed the lines.

Hmm, better before it "bit the big one".

Trying to keep up with youngins on sport bikes these past two days in New Hampshire
was the death blow to my clutch (with my wife one the back). Rattles on takeoffs and slips when being aggressive.

Are Valkyrie clutch baskets the same as the 1500 Wings?
Never done one so this will be an adventure.

No worries.

Always good to have a winter project. Gotta improvise some tools.
My Gl1000 is in great shape BTW.

The Valk clutch lasted 62000 miles.

To whom (Valk owners) it may concern,

Seems that the damper plate rivets tend to break loose and cause
identical symptoms. I will refrain for posting in other than the Valkyrie
section in NGW land.

Thanks

You'd think they would have realized how poor that design was by that time....

Yeah. Same clutch in 88 to 2000 Wings.

Are Valk riders too ham fisted?

I meant the riveted damper plate. I don't know when they started using them but pretty much every Honda from at last '75 seems to have come with one of those ticking time bombs.

Too bad there isn't an upgrade but at our age it should last long enough.

I'm not sure about doing it to the 1500 but this is what we do for 4 cylinder 'Wings and it works for CX/GL500/650 clutches too
