1984 Standard Ignition Switch

#1

Post by SteveStandard »

Greetings. I’m looking for an ignition switch for my 1984 Honda Goldwing 1200 ‘Standard’. As you probably know, the ‘Standard’ was the naked version of the Goldwing 1200 and last made in 1984. My switch has two connectors. Black with four. Red with three. Others I’ve researched have all seven on one plug. VIN plate says 1984…but I wonder. Anyone have some insights. Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I looked it up on the cms site and in the exploded diagram it shows 1 plug.
I threw the part # in duckduckgo and it took me to the cms site with a picture of the switch. Unfortunately it isn't available.
This is the part # 35100-MG9-674
These folks are showing it in stock but they don't have a picture of it. They are in Oklahoma though.

Greetings 5speed and thanks so much for the reply. Really appreciate it. I'm calling Speed Supply ASAP. Also thinking of getting a GW switch that has 7 connectors in one plug. Cutting all the wires and splicing them together. Your thoughts. Thanks again.

Maybe not necessary to cut them off. You can pull the contacts out of the plastic block if you look at them to see how they're made. I made a couple of de-pinning tools from stiff wire and ground a screwdriver end on them to stick down in there and lift the retainer tabs so the contact would back out. Just put them back into the proper block.

Greetings shadowjack and 5speed. Hope you guys had a nice Turkey Day. Thanks for the advice. Great idea. I didn't realize the pins are removeable. I see NAPA has several tools: https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/NW_725168 Onward...

Late to the party yet the switch on the GL1200 Standard can be intermittent and they are hard to come by since I believe it is unique to that standard bike and not the Interstate or Aspencade from 1984.
I am sure you maybe able to devise a workaround, as you have noted if you cannot find an original correct switch.

I own the same bike and mine was acting up two years ago, where when you turned on the ignition there was no power to the bike on quite a few occasions. When it almost stranded me by refusing to power up one time on the road I decided to take it apart once I got back to my garage. It looked pretty good inside, yet I cleaned it up and tightened the copper contacts in the switch bottom and it has been good to go ever since.
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.

Greetings 5speed and flyin900. Thanks for the replies. Really appreciate it. At this point it looks like I'm heading down the path of finding a 7 pin switch, extracting the terminals and retro fitting to my two plug switch. NGW club members have been a great help with my switch issue. Wishing all other '84 Standard owners good luck with your ignition switch. Rubber down!

Greetings 5speed. You've given me a reason to live. I just now ordered the switch in the link you sent to StraightWings. Thanks ever so much for tracking down the switch and turning me on to Andy. You've been very kind and helpful. Fingers crossed the package doesn't get hung up in Customs. Can't thank you enough!

Greetings 5speed and flyin900. Thanks for the original replies. I bought a set of terminal extractors; watched the YouTube vids; and worked for an hour on one terminal. And I'd have 14 to do. It's not like you pop in the extractor and out comes the terminal. Not for me anyway. Plan B was to butt-splice the wires. Just about to do that and I thought maybe I can get the two separate terminals into the seven terminal switch. I used my hand-held grinder (overkill) to grind down the sides of each connector. They fit and all the wires line up by color. Started her up and all things work. See picts for reference. Thanks again for you support.
