the stock 1100 crash bars also look something like that. but it is hard to tell from the angle of the picture. I think 1100 bars will fit the 1000

I was wondering if these would also fit a GL1100. I might be picking one of those bikes up later this year and if so these crash bars may get powder coated and installed.

But I will definitely not put these bars back on the GL1000. Small dents are starting to form in the frame where the bars attached.

But I did install new wheel bearings, swingarm bearings, steering stem bearings, fork seals and fork oil. I am going with clubman bars and rearsets for personal ergonomic fit.

The front suspension is dialed in. And the fork gators make it look SHOCKING (see what I did, there?)

I wonder why no company seemed to engineer and include a better attachment scheme for the crash bars than U-bolts. At least split tubing to fit over the frame tubes and protect them. I've had five GL1000s and all five had the tubes dented by the U-bolts.

the vetter bars had that split design, but yes, a lot of dented frames out there

I have a 76 on my lift right now with dented downtubes caused by the crash bars.

Progress has been slowed by this broken bolt that holds down the connector for the water pipe.

I soaked it in penetrating oil for a few weeks and tried to remove it before taking off the head and it would not budge. So I thought I would try again with the head off - maybe I could get better leverage, but no. Now the head is re-installed and I have to deal with it.

The two metals have become one. Forever joined in corrosive matrimony. May no man pull asunder...

No man, but heat might help. Heat it, hot. You have enough there to grab onto at least. If you’re patient, reeeealy patient even a propane torch will get the bolt part red hot. Down in the aluminum is tougher, but worth a try. If not a lot of guys here report good luck with left handed drill bits.

I've had a couple like that. If just grabbing with small vice grips after a week's penetrant soak doesn't do it, a carefull center-drilling and easy out. Before trying, tap it a few times with a hammer to cause a riff in the marriage. And use good-quality, small vice grips.

Where did the cadaver go?

The cadaver is still sitting in my living room with the broken bolt still in the jug. On the one hand, every time I pass through my living room it mocks me. It says "you think sitting in PB Blaster for two years will make a difference on THIS bolt? Ha! Think again, Mr. Goldwingologist. Study that!" I have pretty much made up my mind that I am going to have to drill it, tap it and torque down the coolant pipe connector with a bigger bolt. I have not gotten around to doing it yet while I work on other projects.

On the other hand, I really like having this nice piece of art in my living room.

I enjoy looking at it every time I pass by. It was a lot of work coating the frame with boiled linseed oil and back when I did it I had no idea how well it would hold up over time, but it still looks good. Swingarm and transfer case, too.

I still do not know how it will hold up on the road, but it has done well in the living room. It is dry to the touch but has an oily sheen.

I am finishing up some other projects and I am thinking about circling back to the cadaver project soon...

Don't use a bigger bolt. Do it the correct way. If you have to drill it out put a heli-coil in it the same size as the original bolt.
