So I'm putting parts and plans together for GM III and doing a bunch of reasearch.

I picked up a set of forks / lower tree / brakes / bars / damper from a 2002 GSX-R1000. There is a company called cognitomoto.com that actually makes a new stem to make the GSX-R1000 a direct bolt on to the GL1000. Of course I'm too cheap for that (although I have to say it is a fair price, $206 with the right bearings).

I ran across the All Balls site that gives you all the bearing size conversions for all the combiniations of bikes and trees.

I didn't know about this and it told me in 10 seconds what I spent an easy hour figuring out. Bad part is the bearing I need is on backorder. :-?

The plan now is to ride the first 1977 GL and do minor improvements through the summer. Then since I had nearly everything to put the parts bike back on the road that is the main project I’ll be working on now.

So far I have a separate titled 1977 frame, a 1983 GL1100 motor and the 2002 GSX-R1000 front end.

I’ll use the GL1100 motor with the 1977 GL1000 cams and rockers (TY robin1731), a set of 1976 carbs (not sure why the 1977 came with 2 sets of carbs, a 1976 and 1978?), the GSX-R front end and the GL1000 spoked front wheel. I’ll also use the 1977 ignition on the GL1100 motor.

First I’ll try to get a rolling chassis. I can do the rear no problem but I need a 30mm x 47mm tapered bearing for the top of the GSX-R stem. That is on back order so it will probably have to sit loosely attached for awhile.

Hopefully I’ll get the parts bike stripped down in the next couple of days.

Lots of cleaning to do!

Back on GM Jr taking advantage of the nice weather. I have 95 miles on it since I put it back on the road. It is running really well, good power, smooth😎

I noticed at the end of today the temp gage and fuel gages would intermittently stop working at the same time.

Since they were tracking together I figured it was probably the 7 volt regulator. Fortunately I had one on the GM III, that won’t be used for awhile.

Ohhhh the front end conversion begins! It is a great look for these motorcycles, but a lot of change comes from it! I ended up changing the rear rim (to better match the front) new speedometer, changing in wiring, extended high-up clip-on bars, the list goes on and on. I look forward to seeing the progress!

I haven’t found too many that have the swap, but so far it isn’t too bad. We’ll see how it goes as it actually goes together.🤞

I haven’t posted for a bit but I’ve been working on the bike. Mostly I’ve been researching and test fitting ideas.

The front end swap to the GSX-R1000 is the key to getting the bike back to a roller. I’m going with the stock GL1000 spoke wheel. Mounting the wheel won’t be a big problem, but finding rotors to match the GL hub and GSXR calipers will be the hard part. I haven’t figured that out just yet.

I pressed the stem out of the GL lower tree hoping that I could just press that into the GSXR lower tree. They both use 30mm bearings. But when I got both stems pressed out I could see the GL stem was straight at 30mm and the GSXR stem was wider where it pressed in.

So I’ll be using the GSXR stem and a 26mm X 47mm upper bearing. All Balls makes that bearing and I have it on order. To get enough height on the stem I’ll press it back in and into the lower tree and past flush about 3/16”. Then I’ll have my buddy weld it in rather than just a press fit.

Than it should be just setting the steering stops.

I will probably run the stock speedo but I’m not sure which way I want to go. I’ll get the bike further along before picking a direction.

I also found the #4 carburetor body I needed on eBay pretty cheap. That came in today and looks good. Now waiting for the steering stem nuts and washers that didn’t come with the front end.

The frame was pretty good, but I decided to touch it up a bit. Sanded it down and smoothed out all the chips and scratches. Came out pretty good. Got the swingarm sanded down and painted this morning.

Ah, finding rotors that fit will be like figuring out a jigsaw puzzle with no edge pieces. Of course a back up plan is a different front wheel but we all are cheering you find a rotor that works with GSXR fork, calipers and a GL wheel. Frame looks great.

Yep. I’m under no illusions about finding the right rotors. Something that just bolts right up is a far stretch, but we can shim, machine and tweak if I can find something close.

The guy a couple doors down was helping me out. He has a Honda Super Hawk. I looked at his and they are a six bolt pattern with a similar bolts circle and center hole, similar off set and a diameter close to the GSXR.

Hard to measure on the bike, but there is hope🤞
