*** GL1200 1984/5 REAR WHEEL HUB AND IGNITION SWITCH FAILING RECALL INFO NEEDED PLEASE!
Hi NGW riders & wrenches.
Does anyone know anything about the 1200 1984/5 safety recalls for the rear wheel hub collapsing and the ignition switch turning itself off at speed?
Looking for any photos of how to identify what your rear wheel is in comparison to the modified wheel made by Honda to rectify the fragile rear wheel hub.
THIS ARE SAFETY RECALLS WHICH INCLUDE ANYONE WITH A 1200 GOLDWING 84/85 PLUS OTHERS?
Yours concerned and thank you!
Angel

I believe the 84/85 goldwings are too old to have any current recalls. And that any in service today have probably had any recalls thst might hve existed

Thanks buddy.
My GW1200 has had 14 previous owners and the rear wheel is still the same OEM one.
No one has had it replaced and it worries me that the recall has been ignored, cost, work involved to change it out?
Scary in that there may be fractures in the rear wheel as it has been off the road since 2011.
Laid up as a genuine barn find. My first Wing!
Best regards & all the best buddy.

I understand your concern. If worried, take the wheel, minus tire, to a machine shop that can install a dye on it, and check for small crackes you can't see with the naked eye. But I have striped a lot of 12's of that vintage, and have not cpme across one with rim or final drive issues.

Seems I recall reading about an issue with the bearing getting loose in the hub. I do not recall anything about collapsing. Try this search search.php?keywords=1200+wheel+bearing& ... mit=Search

What Whiskerfish said. Most were fine, but the bearing was a bit small. Just examine closely where the wheel bearing fits in the hub for any sign of wear and loosening.

1200's have this problem with the rear wheel (I think mostly the earlier ones). The area on the wheel where you insert the bearing enlarged over time and the bearing would get loose. It really was only the bearing on the spline side as it bears all the weight and the other bearing is mostly an idler. Apparently some wheels were then machined out and an insert was placed there to then hold the bearing. ALSO it was really common to wear out the splines. There should be two O-rings to help keep moisture out.

we have a 1984 Gl 1200 with almost 370,000 km and we would not like to find ourselves on foot or worse falling to the ground due to some structural failure!
Thank you in advance

I do not know about ignition switch issues, other than the bikes are old and the switch can wear out. Also with 370,000 km I would bet the hub was fixed if it wore, or was replaced. The stators on the early 84's also went out, but that would have been long replaced. Just make sure you always lube up the rear wheel splines and replace the bearings regularly

The rear wheel bearing was a TSB and only repaired if there was an issue I believe. I have read they also offered an extended warranty on the hub issue but can not find proof

The rear wheel bearing was an issue as noted with it possibly wearing its mounting area and spinning in the recess that it sits in. Not all bikes had an issue. If your 300+ klms with no issues then ride on, as it will not likely ever be an issue for your bike. Next time you have your rear tire replaced have your mechanic check the inside bearing race area for wear or a loose fitting bearing.
Regarding the ignition switch a past member who owned a number of these 1984 standard GL1200's stated that the ignition switch could have an electrical contact issue on the lower area of the switch where the wiring harness plugs into the switch. I own a 1984 GL1200 Standard and have never had an issue with the switch as such, so again if you have logged that many klms with no issues your probably good.
If it did surface as a problem, your mechanic could take the lower section of the switch apart and clean and reset the contacts as new.
Enjoy the bike as you have been doing for many years already, as both these possible issues will likely never affect you ride.

Paola - agree with flyin900. These issues are similar to the automotive undustry, a global recall for due dilligence. The dealer will inspect and if not a problem, the car being inspected does not have any changes done. The Gold Wing is the same. As you mention, your bike has gone some 370K Kms so you're good to go. Accept the information presented here from a knowledge base perspective. Nice to know, but don't have to do anything.Paola Zago wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 8:38 am what what?? can someone better explain to me what these problems are on the GL 1200, what is meant by ignition switch?
