This is a 1975 GL1000, number 5016 off of the assembly line. A little history about me and the GoldWing. From the first time I read about this motorcycle in 1975, I wanted one. In early 1977, I took out a loan and bought a new 1975 off the showroom floor. Smokey’s Honda of Tulsa had a Blue-Green 75 and a Yellow 76 one at the best price point I could find. I finally decided to go with the Blue-Green 75 because it saved me $100.00 and I paid $2100.00 for it. I believe this was in February so it was very cold, but I flew from Kansas City to Tulsa to buy it. The dealer picked me up at the airport and had the bike ready for me to ride it home to Warrensburg MO. It was exciting to get on the bike for the first time and I enjoyed every minute of the ride even though I was freezing. The GL1000 was a revolutionary motorcycle, just as the CB750 was in 1969. The Honda automotive division got involved with designing and created Honda’s first shaft drive, water cooled motorcycle. The GoldWing is still made after all these years. Almost everyone added a Vetter fairing and this was the bike to have if you were touring. I personally prefer the bare bones version just as they were sold on the showroom floor. Turns out I prefer this color over all other GL1000 colors because it changes to green as the sun sets and it is beautiful. I have been able to get a close match using modern paint.

This restored motorcycle was purchased from a couple in Thornton Colorado and it had been sitting for many years. It was originally owned by the woman’s father and he had put over 54000 miles on the bike. I used parts from several bikes to get it back in a good condition. The speedometer and tachometer came from a 1976 GL1000 and were in exceptional condition, so I did not restore them.

The engine needed lots of love so I replaced the piston rings, primary chain, starter chain, valves and many other parts to make it almost like new. I also made some improvements like adding a primary chain tensioner because the first few years did not have this feature. I painted the frame/body parts, rebuilt the carburetors and restored just about everything else on the bike. I handmade the grab bar that goes around the rear part of the seat. I made it out of a 4’ piece of stainless steel tubing and polished it to look like chrome. Some other parts that I made were the four plastic buttons that go on top of the carburetors and the choke linkage covers. I have restored many GL1000s, but I plan to keep this one.

Very nice. I am restoring a 1975 myself. It’s my first Goldwing but I only got it about 2 months ago. It will be a while before I ride it but I hope my first experience is as good as your was. At 68 I’m not too old to have fun. In some ways I’m just starting!

Beautiful job Cfairweather. I hope you have many years riding your creation. If and when the time comes, keep it to gaze at just to stoke the memories. Love the colour and your attention to detail.

I looked through all your pictures, and looking at the detail you went into its definitely a keeper.
Just a small observation, were the reflecters on the side of the headlight fitted to the 1975 model?

I really appreciate you sharing your story about your first Goldwing, the restoration is superb, they are wonderful bikes to this day. Just wondering what paint you are using that you have been able to get a close match using modern paint, care to share?

Matching candy paint is difficult and each layer will change the color slightly but here is the mix I used. If about three layers are applied, it will look like the original without spending a lot of money. When there is bright sunlight the appearance will be blue but when the sun goes down or the light is dim, it will become more teal and even green.

1. EKU-Q-G15 This is a quart kit of Teal EyeKandy 2K Urethane Candy Paint
2. EKU-MOTOKIT-S202-B04-UC210-UR011 (Kit of Stellar Silver [S202], Asiatic Blue, UC-210 HS Glamour clear)
These kits include the activator, reducer, sticks, filters and mixing cups. These do not include primer and sealer.

I paid $278.92 for everything and this included shipping. It is enough paint for two or three bikes if you are careful.

Here are the steps:
1. Prime and seal.
2. Apply Stellar silver base coat.
3. Mix two parts of the EyeKandy teal with one part of the EyeKandy blue. Then mix this new color with the activator and reducer as directed (411 mix). Apply this very evenly.
4. Apply clear.
This is how light can affect this color. Lots of light will turn it blue and dim light turns it teal to green.
