Re: Waking Donna; a '75 GL1000
Hey Y'all,
I have a question about something peculiar that happens when I crank the starter.
She will spin like a top with no throttle, and likewise with the choke pulled, but when the throttle is opened, the starter labors to turn over the engine. The more open the throttle, the more the starter labors. What causes that?

I would surmise more airflow =more compression...

Re: Waking Donna; a '75 GL1000
Ups and downs.
Today's down is the starter clutch won't engage.
I went to start it yesterday and it fired with a horrendous clatter and shut down immediately. Since then, the starter clutch won't engage. I have turned the engine with the stator bolt, so there's that. I should note that there is a "rubber squeak" as the engine approaches compression; it's quiet, but it's there. I don't know where it's coming from (or if important);maybe the right timing belt.
Regarding the starter clutch, is my only option to remove the engine and service/replace the starter clutch?
I thought I would run this by the forum before I start taking things apart (again).

Re: Waking Donna; a '75 GL1000
Often the starter clutch spins without engaging the engine 9f the oil is dirty, to heavy , or the outside temp is a bit cool and the bike has been sitting a while without starting. Or all of the above. I would try a few other things before pilling the engine.

Re: Waking Donna; a '75 GL1000
Yep like Cyborg says and if it were mine would add a half can of Seafoam to the oil and bump start the engine. Then I would let it run for quite awhile at moderate speeds then would shut it down and try the starter. It may well be that the sprag clutch is full of sludge etc. If it showed some improvement I would then ride the bike for a hundred miles or so being very gentle on the throttle. Would then do an oil change and hope for the best. Worth trying before pulling the engine IMHO.

Thank you for your replies fellows.
So... no big giant hammers, huh?
I'll move forward with the brake rebuilds, I'm gonna need them for the bump start.

Re: Waking Donna; a '75 GL1000
My '78 rescue's starter would only engage maybe one out of ten or more tries at first. Changed the oil and replaced one quart with a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil. Parked it on a hill so that the oil could reach the clutch (high in the back). Then tried until it started and let it idle a while and then rode it. Then it was one in four tries to engage. Moire riding and it became reliable every time. Drained the oil again and refilled my normal 15W40 diesel oil.

Yeah ... it’s hard to get oil up to the starter clutch ... speed bumps help ... but you have to go fast ...

Re: Waking Donna; a '75 GL1000
I know , I know, I've already gotten my answer, but, I just can't leave it alone .
I changed the oil to 10w40 including one quart of MMO and tilted the front of the bike up about 30 degrees. Then tried the starter a couple of dozen times thinking oil might get slung up to the starter clutch by the chain. Nah.
Is that even possible?
The sound of the starter was such that I thought for sure that the chain was broken; no chain sounds at all. So I pulled the starter to take a look. Nope, still there. While the starter was out I tried turning the lower sprocket with my finger; to the left it engages, to the right of spins freely. Then I turned the stator bolt; normal direction the starter sprocket remains still, backwards the sprocket spins. So great, I think it's fixed itself! Put the starter back on and...nothing. Any thoughts?
Back to plan A I guess. She'll have to wait for the bump start.
...but, what if I made my own kick start lever...hmmm

Re: Waking Donna; a '75 GL1000
You can also over-fill by a quart or two even as long as you don't run it overfilled. Are you certain the planetary gears in the starter are Ok?

Ok on the overfill.
I'll take the starter off(I'm getting good at that) and have a look inside.
Thanks!

It just occurred to me that I bench tested the starter during this latest episode and it spins just fine .
I will give the over-fill a try.

Oh, and another thing
I've been cranking on it with the extractor, heat gun, and PB.
Any advise is greatly appreciated.
