'79 GL1000 newbie - Western WI

#1

Post by DanH »

I recently joined and just love this site! Purchased my first wing a couple months ago, a '79 in "almost running" condition. Been wanting to get back into biking after a 23 yr break (last was a '95 Magna). Always have enjoyed working on cars, and once I got wind of this site I started gleaning tons of info and felt confident enough to try my hand at keeping up a "vintage" wing!
Largely thanks to the tips and suggestions from this site, so far have changed the timing belts, flushed radiator and drained/replaced all fluids, cleaned up the brake calipers, and complete Randakk's carb rebuild (that is what brought it from "almost-running" to running). I removed the fairing and put together a headlight and blinkers from the odds and ends box of parts that came with the bike. Planning to build a new seat to replace what's on there now, and hope to do some more work over the winter, but just happy to have it on the road for now!

Thanks Gord! I would love to post some pics, but seems I am unable? Not sure if it's something simple I am missing? I tried doing it as "attachment" and selecting the files, but once I post nothing is actually there.

You might need to have five posts before being able to add a pic. It's a forum restriction to cut down on spammers. So just tell us a little bit more about you and/ or the bike in a couple of posts, then have at it!

Carbs are usually what separates an almost running bike from a running bike. Sounds like you have a good project to work on.

Winter? That's the best season to ride where I live, too hot in the summer unless I take a night ride when the temps get all the way down in the 90's, 80's if I'm really lucky.

Haha - yeah, someday I need to work out a "snowbird" routine to enjoy Wisconsin in the summer and Arizona in the winter! That would be great to be able to ride comfortably all year.

I am going to try one more time to add a couple pictures here - maybe now that I am past that 5 post milestone.

Sorry for the abundance of posts and the lack of useful content! I am going to try posting those pics one more time before I give up for the day.
I really wish I wouldn't have built this up so much either - not great pics in comparison to most of what I have seen on this site, but still - I'm proud to own her!

Nice looking bike, worth the wait on the pics.

Since everyone else posts pics, I guess I'll have to try it too.

Very nice! The yellow and black combo really pops.

Thanks again for the nice words! I do have several technical questions I would like to throw out and also one small task I was able to successfully tackle (gummed up barely working turn signal). I think probably makes most sense for me to post that in technical discussions?

Yes, it's best to start a thread in the tech discussions. Post as much background info as you can, ie. year of bike, what history you know, and what you've worked on so far. One thread with several questions can make it easier for others to notice issues that may be interrelated, as well.
