Compression is 160 ish on all four. Have not done a leak down. Belt timing marks are lined up, even went back to check and take pictures. Ignition timing is where I would head on a 1000 but the 1100 is a different ball game.

You can still check the timing dynamically if you have an 'old fashioned' timing light. If you don't have a 'window' plug, I've read that a six inch long piece of the appropriate diameter pvc pipe can be threaded into the hole and will prevent most of the oil splash issues (I've never tried it myself). At least that would answer that part of the question...
Or you could mark out degrees on the edge of the cam cover and check it there. IIRC, Eric Heath did that on his project...

I'll have to look for his write up on this. It would sure ease my mind to know if the timing is correct and eliminate that possibility. I just don't know enough about how the 1100 puts things together.

Interesting observation today on my problem. Checking for vacuum leaks I hooked up a gauge to the vac line on carb #3. Could not detect much of any vacuum. Maybe have to pull the rack again to see if there is a blockage there. Applied suction to the advance unit and it clicks but would not even begin to hold vacuum. No idea how that unit works or if it is indeed bad. More testing.

IIRC, the advance unit is both vacuum and mechanical. I have tested one, but it's been a while so I don't recall the exact procedure/ specs. It should hold vacuum. I do recall reading somewhere that one would probably not notice the difference in performance if the vacuum portion is not working, but don't quote me on that, lol!

I used a protractor centered on the cam pulley bolt and marked every five degrees above and below the backplate timing marks. (The ones for belt timing) Cam turns half speed of crank so 5 degrees is ten degrees of crank timing. It gives you a rough idea of where it’s at.

I have a few videos, I’ll have to remember how to load them. Or find the old post.

I think I have found the the answer. All along I have suspected the ignition timing and this may prove that.

This is the pick up coils and the vacuum advance. Notice the circled area where there should be a connecting arm. The missing arm is intended to keep the pick up coils properly timed at all times based on the presence of vacuum. Without the arm the timing is free to move and cause the timing to be off most of the time.
The second picture is the same type of unit from a different motor. Notice the arm on the second unit. Now all I have to do is find a replacement and go through the pita process of putting it back in. Had to drop the swing arm to reach it. Even with the swing arm out of the way, the top bolt is behind a frame section.

Huh! Weird. I wonder what happened to the arm? I have one on a spare engine sitting in my basement. No clue on the value. Make me an offer and cover shipping and it's yours.

I might take you up on that. Need to check with a local salvage guy since he owes me a part.

Salvage guy did not have a complete unit but he did have a broken one that still had the arm. Brought it home and figured out how to get the arm off and mounted to the one I have. Now all I need is some warmer weather to get it mounted and tested. Sure hope this cures this hurdle and makes it run more like it should.

Tomorrow is the expected big day. I re-installed the repaired pick up unit today and will be ready to fire her up tomorrow. Ran out of daylight and did not want to risk missing something. I have high hopes.
