1968 CL175 Winter project

#1

Post by flyin900 »

I picked up a 1968 Honda CL175 (scrambler) earlier this year as a project to work on over the winter and I chose a bike from the 60's to try something different.
The bike was a non runner and mostly complete with a few signal bracket mods that are typical on old bikes as a McGiver cheap fix. I have been working at getting everything cleaned and painted, so that I can just do the reassembly later during the winter.
So here are a few as I bought it condition and my progress so far.

It is actually a mix of two Duplicolour lacquer spray gun paints I have had for quite some time now. I found the straight orange was really vivid and too bright for my liking. I had some of another colour the Molten Metallic Red left from another build and mixed the two in a 65% Burnt Orange Metallic and 35% Molten Metallic Red.
The bike came in that Burnt Orange colour as a paint choice from Honda originally. I did a little side cove treatment in the silver colour as there will be the rubber knee pads and the Honda wing logo on the front section of the tank.
Since these are lacquers as the base paint coats and I want to spray Urethane Clear coat over the lacquer base I am letting the lacquer fully cure first.

I see your in Canada too; so any Canadian Tire store or their sister stores under PartSource. The Dupli-Color paints are available at most parts suppliers and come in a 1 liter/quart tin for about $32.00 Canadian. I would expect in the US your in the low $20.00 US for a quart.

tks for the info
I'll have to check next time I'm at Crappy. It's hard to get a good idea what the paint will look like by looking at a plastic spray bomb cover.

Cylinder fin rebuild/replace using high heat Metal Epoxy

#8

Post by flyin900 »

So I am toggling back and forth between my friends 1972 Honda CB500K which is in the final stages and my prep work on the 1967 Honda CL175 scrambler which is my winter in house basement project. I am trying to get everything cleaned and painted and prepped for just a slow assembly over the winter months.

The barrels are off to facilitate replacing the entire cam chain and new tensioner assembly system. A mishap occurred and the barrels sustained some large fin damage on three corners of the top section of the assembly. I have previously rebuilt a small section of a CB400F's outer fin a few years ago and it was a success, so I am trying to replicate the process on a larger scale with three corners broken off.

So I drilled the fins where the pieces had broken off and wired them with a flexible yet stiff wire that could be inserted into the holes in the sides of the fins. I used a couple of micro drills a 1/16 which was a little too big in some areas of the fin and a #62 drill.

Track it has been a good lesson in what can be done with some of the new composite materials out there. I used a product called Tech Steel which is a 500F epoxy and metal powder mixture. You can get something like it from JB Weld too for high temp, yet the specs on the curing are different between the two products.
It is a soft tube like material with two compounds that you knead together and the Tech metal sets hard in 15 mins, so you need to work quickly.

Here are the final finished repairs with a decent sanding, yet still strong enough to hold the new fins in place.

Thanks for the info. It looks great! We used the JBWeld stuff on a yet untested crack/thread repair on the lower-most bolt for the transmission cover on Josh's 1100, so I'm always interested in what others use. Your product looks like it has more of a granular consistency than the JB we used.

So here is the Tech Steel Epoxy product and a rear caliper for my 1981 GL1100 that had a badly scraped cap area on the outer caliper which was quite visible. I used the Tech Steel to rebuild the missing outer "cap" area on the caliper and repainted as new.

Highly recommend this product. The only downside is you need to work fast and be organized since it has a very quick set up time of 4-5 mins. After that it has already changed chemical composition and is very hard to work/shape anymore.

Further progress on CL175

#15

Post by flyin900 »

So I have been working a little more recently on this bike (1968 Honda CL175) and starting to get some pieces put back on both the frame and the motor areas. There is some serious work needed on the exhaust as a PO cut the back tip off the muffler. I am looking into someone who can do a little custom fab work back there and then possibly a rechrome of both the exhaust pipes/muffler and heat shield assy.

The last photo shows the repaired fins on the barrels that came out well with good fit and finish. :-D
