Look great. I am considering paint on "red belly" covers instead of polish. On one build I had them powder coated and that worked well also.
Bikes at present:

And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair

Since it's apart, and maybe you have a dremel tool, then maybe you can get rid of the casting flash in the intake and exhaust ports. I'm not saying to polish the ports but you can certainly clean them up. Like chicken soup for a cold ...it can't hurt. Regarding actual polishing of the ports I will defer to Robin.

Greg you are psychic, When I had the heads off and apart I used my dremel to get rid of some casting flash inside the ports. I didn't really polish them just knocked down some of the rough spots. I have the correct year cam on its way so I will be able to use the original tach.
This bike has really been a learning experience and I have definitely learned not to drop a cam on a concrete floor. Monday I will try to get the single carb manifold made and installed.

Okay, As some of you know I screwed the pooch a couple of weeks ago and broke my camshaft on my 77. A very generous member here sold me a camshaft and the rockers for almost nothing. I installed them the other day and torqued the bolts to 20 ft lbs. The cam turns but it is tight. I am wondering if I should switch out the rockers into the old blocks to see if that turns easier. I am using some red looking assembly lube I got from autozone so everything is lubed good.
I think I will strip the rockers and shafts out of the old blocks and bolt them up empty to see how it turns.
I know I am putting a camshaft into a different engine but they are both the same year so I am hoping it should work.
With the broken camshaft and the original blocks it turns noticeably easier.

The word from on high is that the cam carriers were line bored at the factory and need to stay matched together if possible. Another cam should work. Is it possible that the carrier assembly from the other side was switched by accidento? I would try swapping them first. The cam is something that isn’t going to bend much.

Others in this predicament have tried 3-4 carriers to find one that allows the cam to spin easily.

Yeah, you should have used the cam holder that was with the original head. They are bored as a set. I have gone through the hassle of trying different holders on one head to get one that "worked". You see heads without holders and holders by themselves for sale all the time. Not a good idea to buy them like that. Kawasaki did the same thing with cam caps and heads. And you see those for sale separate all the time too. :IDTS:

Got it back together today with the original cam holder and it turns much better.
Set the valves and am piecing it togethet but I am wondering what the common consensus is on this plate. Is it really necessary. I ill be running a single carb so a little heating might be good.

I removed mine this spring and seems fine without it, even in 40 Celsius weather I haven't noticed any sort of issues. I cut the plate off and reinstalled the mounting brackets on their own, but I did have to replace all the motor mount bolts with shorter ones, the un-threaded portion on the stock ones was too long to allow them to tighten up all the way.

I carved out the center of mine. I do notice the seat is hotter in slow driving.

Started the construction of the intake manifold today. A piece of 2-1/2 inch square tube 7-1/8" long, Layed out and drilled the four holes for the pipes, Milled the opening for the carb base plate and welded the base plate on. Still need to tackweld the tubes to the manifold but that is done on the bike.
After the tubes are welded I will cap off the ends and be done. Might just get this powder coated.
