Re: 1977 barn find
Got my gaskets today ( Thanks Randall) and soon will be starting to rebuild. I have had the gas tank full of evaporust for about a week rolling it around everyday to get a different section soaking and it is now spotless inside. That stuff really works the best. I might do a vinegar flush before a water rinse then paint the outside then put it back in the frame.
The cams look like new because the bike only has 23000 original miles.
I still have to blast and paint the battery tray and of course make the intake manifold for the single carb. Lots to do but my summer classes are wrapping up this week so I will have a couple of weeks of free time before it all starts again.

Re: 1977 barn find
Soon I will be starting to reassemble the 77 and I have some questions.
I have seen videos where the guys paint the head gaskets with copper spray gasket stuff, Is this a good idea?
Where can I find head torque and sequence info? I don't have a manual.
Do you put a small dab of grease on the head bolt threads and heads or use never seize?
I DID get new timing belts.
Thanks for all the help so far, I will post pictures soon.

Re: 1977 barn find
Advice on head bolts is grease on threads and the washers. (Both sides, I think) Don’t forget to clean out the bolt threads as well. A pocket of grease in the bottom can throw your torque off and possibly do other damage. ( think hydrolocked) I use a wire brush and brake cleaner and air pressure.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: 1977 barn find
Also, torque the bolts to 45lbs-ft. There was a TSB back in the day about that.
Go to shop talk and you will find some good info about doing the head gaskets.

Re: 1977 barn find
Today I installed the rear wheel and brakes along with the stock fender, then I cleaned the left side head in my blast cabinet because I was out of baking soda. I have a medium grit abrasive in there but it is old and not very coarse anymore. It got the head and the intake and exhaust ports really clean. After that I lapped the valves with an electric drill and a piece of fuel line. I also lapped the head surface with a piece of glass and some 220 sandpaper.
With any luck I should have a running motorcycle by the middle of the week.
Tomorrow I am putting the heads on and next week I will be making another single carb manifold. With any luck I should have a running motorcycle by the middle of the week.
