As long as you're updating it, might want to mention one other small detail: the engine needs to be removed to do this conversion comfortably on a 1000.

Re: Advise how to disassemble GL1200 clutch
If I recall correctly, I went from the side a bit....my memory is a bit fuzzy, but seemed to me I pressed off center.Dma251 wrote:You are compressing it from the center of the clutch and the clips are accessible? I compressed it about 3-4mm and was not able to remove the circlip. I'll give it another try. It seemed like compressing it just made the pressure on the clip tighter.wingrider wrote:Like I say, no need to make any tools. Pick up a 6” C-clamp if you don’t have one. It’ll work to compress that big spring, and will enable you to pull out the clips fairly safe.
Thank you for your advice!

Okay, I'm not trying to beat a dead horse here, but the manual shows the use of a proper tool that compresses the entire circumference of the diaphragm spring and allows you to remove the circlip. Absent that, I think I'm gonna have to build a tool, because I see trouble if I try to compress the diaphragm spring from just one side with a clamp. Maybe some do it that way, but I don't want to try it. I think a couple bucks from the hardware store will buy the parts I need to make a tool I can use in my BIG vice.
I will post my results.

The bottom picture is the way to do it , with a large tube but with a cut out so that you can get tothe circlip. I have a huge vice, so it got calmped on that rather than use a G clamp. It still ain't easy!

Thankyou for that reassurance. It seems that many here have converted to a hydraulic slave, but few have gone the next step and swapped in the larger 1200 clutch. Even fewer apparently have gone to the trouble of removing the damper-plate.Old Fogey wrote:The bottom picture is the way to do it , with a large tube but with a cut out so that you can get tothe circlip. Here's one more question - do you use only one steel plate in place of the damper, or do you use a second steel plate at the bottom of the stack to equal the thickness of the damper-plate?

You have to use two plates to make up the thickness of the'B'

Two, one at bottom, one where the B plate was.
I thought about how I got my clutch apart, and recalled that I used two clamps on it.

Re: Advise how to disassemble GL1200 clutch
Back together and it feels so much better! The clutch lever effort is half what it was. Haven’t run it yet, so a little early to tell, but I think this mod will be well worth the trouble. Also, my matching CBR11xx levers and master cylinders are going to look good on my restomod.
Thanks for the good advise!
