It just might be time for a beer.

I wonder if my starter has gone bad...
you can "bench test it" on the bike. I would have another set of hands to hold the clutch lever in and the front brake on as an added safety precaution..
I would unhook the positive cable from the starter and use jumper cables either from your bike battery or your car to apply power directly to the starter and see if it works.

It's chocolate cake time.
No, it's beer time.
I got the Puppy started today w/ a bump-start. I had rolled it out from the patio & gave the start button a tentative push & I heard a little grrrr, & then it stopped. My son pushed me. As it turns out, he is worth a little more than someone who plays Fortnight for days at a time. He pushed, & I was the captain. It roared to life (see below), just like a combination lion/alligator roar. Remember, I have removed the mufflers, & I'm in the process of designing a newer system. The design team of Procrastinators & Lollygaggers, et alia are out to lunch, so not much has been accomplished.
Can you find the stainless steel mufflers in this picture?

After the Puppy roared to life, I took it for a little spin around the complex.

Special Invitation Section

I guess I now have to test the battery for its true charge & CCA, & maybe I'll take 5speed's advice & check the starter motor (even though he consumes vanilla cake & lives on the other side).

Oh, and one other downer; I'm out of scotch.

Busy today and haven't got to my 1100 yet. Just have to top up the oil and check the air pressure in the tires and shocks..
Speaking of rye..apparently you shouldn't consume it before 6pm according to she who must be obeyed..
So..I picked some of this up for my coffee...

I didn't know they made a cream. Hmmm, time for a trial run if I can find it.

Before running errands, I set the trickle charger to the battery again. When I returned, I tried to start it, & I got the
little grrr; yea, a tiny grrr, just like an ocelot kitten. Then when my son got home, we ran cables between his bike battery & my bike battery & let them set for half an hour. Nuttin' but a click.

Perhaps I am a victim of American Mediocrity. Perhaps the battery is defective. Perhaps the trickle charger is defective. Perhaps I'm defective. Next, I just might replace the cables, from the starter & the one from the starter relay solenoid.
I don't know.
And I'm still out of scotch.

Do get the battery properly checked, just because something is (rather) new, doesn't mean it's ok! Back in the day when I bought a brand new 83, I went to start it after a week, and the battery was dead! Had to get a new one on warranty!
Most importantly, make sure you have adequate supplies of Scotch!

For the third time in my life, I followed someone's directions.
So-- 5speed (and everybody else who has been following my dilemma), I disconnected the positive lead to the battery; I disconnected the lead to the starter. Bike in neutral. First, I ran the jumper cables from the positive on the battery & then to the starter & got nothing. Then I ran some 12 gauge wire from the positive terminal of the battery to the post on the starter. Nothing. Not a click. Not a "How ya Do?" Dead. Not even a complementary kitten growl. I reconnected everything & tried the start switch again & got the click. Lights work (except one tail light) Turn signals. Horn. Brake lights.

I guess this means that new starter I bought when I built the bike has gone bad, yes?
Please advise. I'm about to do something drastic like spend two hours at the gym & ninety seconds at the liquor store buying scotch.
Yep, still out of scotch.
chewy999, thanks. I'm working on those parts of the dilemmical quandary.

From what you said, it's now sounding like the starter has a problem. You can check it out of the bike by connecting the positive side of the battery to the post on the starter, and another cable from the negative terminal to an unpainted part of the starter. If it works, there is a lot of torque when the starter works, so clamp it down.

I think my next step would be to pull the starter and bench test it using jumper cables and my car battery.

Yep. Just did all that stuff. Chewy, I just read one of your posts re this issue.
Voltmeter battery very low. I'm off to store for battery to test the battery again.
When I touch the start button, head light cuts off completely.
I may have to pull the starter.

Yes, the light dims when we touch the start button. That's what the book says. The Mechanic's Manual also has wonderful advice on testing the starter motor. "Install the engine. Test the starter motor." I'm unsure if that's a direct translation from the original Japanese language.

Treacherous 5.2 Mile Roundtrip to Target
I nearly died several times on the way to Target to buy those all-important batteries for the volt meters. First, I wasn't even out of the neighborhood before some bozo opened his door right in front of my truck. I wasn't scared; I had the larger vehicle. But the guy was on his phone & didn't check his mirrors before that awesome & mighty irresponsible fling of the door. I swerved & breezed on down to the stop sign. Immediately, a young woman on her phone in a white Jeep nearly plowed into my rear end. I took accident-avoidance procedures & pulled away from the stop sign. Dang! I thought, she's following me. All the time she chit-chatted on her phone & tail-gated me all the way up the hill to one of the busiest intersections in San Diego County: Balboa Ave meets Genessee Ave.

I thought she was going to plow into me, so I took evasive maneuvers over a sidewalk, through a gap in the bushes, & narrowly missing several Girl Scouts in full regalia selling cookies (My, oh, my, entrepreneurs are starting young these days). I whipped around the bank, over two mores curbs (I"m glad I installed those Bilstein shocks several months ago), & I entered the main parking lot. And there she was! Still giggling into her phone & endangering everybody in her path. I slammed the truck into the closest parking spot. I'd rather walk several blocks just to avoid her. Heart rate: 120 bpm, not too bad considering.

I got home & slammed a battery into voltmeter #1. Instantly, one of the leads broke off the battery connection. "No big deal," I thought. "I have another one." I opened up voltmeter #2. The lead on that one was already broken.

I've made a mess of the whole day, so I think I'll just go to the gym & lift about 19 tons of cold steel.
