No such thing as left head/right head. The cam is what makes the difference.

It would be foolish to try and do two at a time. When all the shavings, grinding, grit is in the one jug, you don’t want to move the piston until it’s cleaned out. One sanding grit gets by and into the ring groove near the top of the piston and it will score the wall easily. An actual cutter must be safest as at least the debris is aluminum.

If using sandpaper like I do, it takes two passes with fresh sandpaper anyways as the aluminum loads the sandpaper up.

If I do this again, I think I will tape up the circumference of the piston and cylinder. This would make cleaning easier, and since I know of at least four individuals who just took a hand grinder and enlarged the valve pocket I’d probably do that. You just have to know what makes a grinder jump and make sure that doesn’t happen. It doesn’t need much to clear. Some speculate that a little deeper and smoother pocket could aid filling.

sorry i didn't mean try to clearance both pistons at the same time on the same side. I meant can I use the right head i bought for alignment on the left side of the motor.

I like the masking idea. keep everything clear.

Just a quick question did you use the 1000 timing belts or the 1200 after reassembly?

Wingrider, did you take a picture? Am I to understand you just free-hand cut the rebate?

You need 1200 belts for the extra width, they have one more tooth. You also need 1200 head gaskets.

The heads work on either side. The cams are side-specific, which is what Robin was saying.

Too easy huh? Finding a 2” wheel would make it easier. 1.5” even better. I cleaned mine up with small disks, the ones used with a roloc.

I think I may have a couple more shots of mine. Will have to take a peek.

I started with the sandpaper on a valve, and got the line I needed to cut with that, then took the 4” grinder and gave it a light tap.

As said, you can use one head and do both sides.

I also took modeling clay and spread it over where the valves would hit. Put everything together, and tightened down the head and made sure the valves were set just a hair tight. Then turned it over by hand two times and then measured my clay to be sure I had enough space.

I didn’t take any pictures of it, but I ended up notching the piston a bit for the exhaust valves as well. I didn’t want any chance of things connecting.
