Coolant leak.

#1

Post by BNess1964 »

Just got all of my 79' s oil leaks fixed and now I keep finding puddles of coolant under the front of the left head. Seems to be dripping down from the most forward exhaust stud. Cannot find the leak above the exhaust stud. Wondering about a weeping head gasket. Any ideas? The puddle appears under the bike overnight without even running the engine.

There is a good chance it is coming from the coolant tube joint. When the o-ring gets hard with age and the aluminum expands with heat it will leak a bit but stops when it cools off. I stuff a cleanex under the tube to see if it catches anything.
i finally made it past the junkyard dogs!!

Yea pretty sure Bob nailed it. Usually leaks from the crossover tubes then seeps into the spark plug well and out through the drain hole. Looks like it is coming off the exhaust stud.

Found it! When you're right, you're right. Order new gaskets and remove the coolant tubes. Could have been worse.

it helps to put some lube on the new o-ring when you ease it in the hole

After everything was replaced I find that the thermostat cover has a tiny weeper. Another 3 bucks. Leak has been time consuming to find and fix. Just my nature to not be able to live with any leaks.

Rather than chase lots of leaks over time, why not just get a full set of cooling system o-rings and gaskets and be done with it. Regarding o-ring lube ( :joker ) I use a bit of silicone dielectric grease on the rubber bits.
