GL1100 Flat Tracker

#1

Post by hmratbam »

HMR's latest effort. Haven't decided yet what to call it. So far "Fattie Flattie" of Sweetie Streetie" are the front runners. dancr Anyone with an opinion on the subject is welcome to express it.
I have always been a fan of the "sideways boys" never did it in organised competition, just fooled around a little on the hardpan flats(playas to those with an education). Had a sprint car for awhile and did a little "slideways" stuff on 4 wheels. Awhile back Rebel gave me an FT500 ascot,I changed it around a little and painted it to resemble Bubba Shobert's 86(?) #1 Flat tracker. I think I lost all the pics of it when my hard drive went out in Dec.
Anyhow, when the 82 swallowed a valve some doors opened ideas hatched and here is the plan: Spoke wheels,1000 shelter.Darkwing 2 seat,17" wheels front and rear "class c" traction, stacked exhausts on the left side, red, white and blue paint scheme and (if I can find $600) a Holley 390 cfm 4 barrel. A couple of years ago I helped a guy in Jackson Ca clean out his garage so I have a lot of the parts,a 75 pretty much complete w/0 motor,an 1100 motor with 75 heads and cams, all the spoke wheels and hubs except short a 17" rim,it's coming from Odlidle in Denver area, nobody on here had one. New spokes coming from Buchanan.
I'll repeat the invitation: Anyone with ideas, suggestions or criticisms feel free to share them.
Here we go! :crosso :crosso :cross
ps: There is a picture of the Ascot last one on page 5 of my album.

Very close to "Fat Rat"? "Flat Rat" would be a slow one that didn't get out of the way of the forklift.

This is the front mount for the shelter frame. The 1100 has a bolt there.but it's too short and could be lower. I bent a u-shaped piece of flat strap drilled a hole in the center, welded a bolt in the hole and welded the whole thing to the back bone.

These are the lower shelter frame mounting tabs. The 1100 has some near the front but they are in the wrong place. I made L-brackets,bolted them to the shelter frame assembled everything to make sure it was all square and level, then I tacked them in place. Removed the frame and welded them all up.After I welded them I took some of the tabs with threaded holes that I had cut off here and there and welded them to the L brackets. That's easier for me than trying to weld those tiny 6mm nuts to the flat strap.

This is the more or less finished swingarm. I sawed a piece off the left side of the 1000,just forward of the boss where the bolt that holds the caliper passes thru. I like the way the1000 rear caliper is fitted better than the one on the 1100. I know I'm only getting a single piston caliper but I like the way the 1000 rear looks better than the 1100. Then I bolted the 1000 final to the 1100 swingarm and assembled everything. Kept checking alignment and vertical while trimming and fitting the two swingarms 'til they fit pretty nice. Put some pieces of the 1 inch flat strap in there for backing and welded the whole thing together. This is how I did the Bopper and it worked out ok.

Took the front wheel off the 1000 and bolted it on the 1100 forks. It's hard to see but when it's all bolted together the1000 disc is not quite centered in the 1100 caliper a small shim will cure that. Either the disc has to come out or the caliper has to move in. I don't remember what I calculated the thickness to be but it will probably be a little cut& try action in the end anyway. So after a fairly long day we have an 1100 with spoke wheels and a little bit more petite shelter!
It took about twice as long to do the post as it took to do the work! I'm not much of a welder, pretty good grinder, and an almost totally dysfunctional 'puter guy! But there it is!

Welcome to the 21st century. Glad you figured the pics out. Looking forward to your build. Now, you do understand that the format of how to post pics will change because of the internet's ability to sense when an old codger (like me) has just figured it out?
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I do understand and I am not particularly looking forward to that eventuality! It took me over ten years to get it the first time!

Didn't get much done today, did a major service on the pickup which is bringing JBZ and me to Texas! The parts are coming in,headlight and rear wheel donor for the front 17 yesterday, Darkwing seat and accessories today. I did map the wheel getting ready for wheel building when the spokes get here. If you ever plan on doing a wheel, mapping it makes the process virtually idiot proof.(essential around here!)

Not much progress with running all over the country and lots of classes when I got back but I got the frame all modified and painted, the engine painted and partially installed. Don't stress over the overspray on the covers, they will be replaced.
