DeltaWing Build

#1

Post by Sandy »

Inspired by the exploits of
gltriker; “Maybe I'll call it Threedom”
and
transitman; “Making a Trike”
I have decided to take the sage advice of ericheath and attempt to
“start planning your trike build now so it’s done before your 75.”
Having completed my 76 with Watsonian sidecar in 2010

Most recent 76 build completed 2015,

leaves me with a 77 “frankenbuild” completed in 2013 that would be a good candidate for a bolt on trike accessory.

This then will be my very slow built thread for the DeltaWing 1000, completion date unknown.

Gord, you can do it, but if you don't need to, ride on. I sure hope I can still ride at 75, like lots of you guys.

I'm asking Sandy for close ups of the bushing, but he's probably arranging it as I type.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Eric:
I didn't take too many pictures of the bushing.
Suffice to say it's just a hard bronze donut stuffed in the swingarm hole.
Tight fit.
I did drill out material behind the bushing so the 77 pivot bolt could go through.

Purchased a used GM S10 differential from local auto wrecker.
S10 Differential used.JPG
S10 Differential used.JPG (66.6 KiB) Viewed 1061 times
After dismantle and a good clean up it needed to be cut down to a size more in keeping with a trike.
I decided to remove 13" from the right side and 7" from the left would center the unit to the driveshaft of the Honda. Removing the material from the center of the axle tubes to maintain the axle bearing races.

Same amount of material was removed from the axles then the ends machined, welded and trued.

Now I have to join the GM differential to the Honda drive shaft.
Thanks to Cyborg and Rat I acquired a sacrificial drive unit that donated its pinion shaft and joint to the project.
Gm vs Honda pinion shafts.jpg

To join the two, I cut the GM yoke and and used only the splined coupling.
Then manufactured an adapter to hold the Honda pinion joint.

Manufactured a coupling to join the S10 differential to the Honda Ddiveshaft tunnel of the swing arm.
This unit is in 2 halves, one bolts to the driveshaft tunnel and the other must be welded to the S10 differential.
The two pieces will then be bolted together encasing the GM/Honda yoke adapter.

Feel the same way (jealous) thought I was uptown when I got the Battery powered DeWalt impact.

Sorry but I have to clarify:
My machinist buddy just retired and has all the machines necessary to do this work, so although I'm the design / engineer / apprentise, it's TZ and his machines that are making the parts I'm needing.
This project would not be practical cost wise if not for TZ's shop.
Same is happening now with some welding. Although I have an arc welder in my shop and will do most of the welding, I'm taking the critical pieces to a professional weld shop. I'm just not confident enough that my welding would be what I want holding the important parts together at hwy speed.
