I've heard that GL1100 carbs on a GL1000 work very well. Is that true?

Yes, they work. I have a set on mine. Only because I didn't have a good set of 1000 carbs at the time. Top end performance will suffer a bit as the 1100 carbs are smaller.

My 79 has 83 carbs on it, it runs OK but seems lean at low rpm when cold. it chugs if I don't warm it up long enough. I'd like to put it back to stock.

so the 1100 carbs are smaller than the 1000? would you get more performance out of putting 1000 carbs on an 1100 then?

Simply put, no. The carbs are 'matched' to the engine and it's characteristics, especially the cams. Other factors, such as gearing, also make a difference. Putting 1000 carbs and cams will change the performance of the 1100,from what I've read. There are a couple of people here who've done that...

Thanks for all the info. I think I'll just keep the stock carbs on my '76.

My 1000 has performed well with 1100 carbs for several years now. The bike came that way and I had the same concerns. If I can get my hands on a good 1000 rack for a reasonable cost, I'll convert back for the sake that everything is matched. Otherwise, I'll keep riding the way it is.

I have an 1100 that I resurrected (certainly not restored) and after messing with the stock carbs for a while, I switched to a set of GL1000 carbs fresh from the box (rebuilt by Pistol Pete) for another project. The bike runs well but I don't think it has the get up that my other 1100's have with stock carbs. I will switch back to the stock carbs as soon as I get the 1000 project I am working on ready to run.

I like 1100 carbs on a 1000 ..... better cold starts especially.

I don't miss the little bit at the top end ...... :wheelchair crossy.gif :wheelchair

Yes, the 1000's usually get a squirt of starter fluid to save the battery, the 1100's usually kick off on the first rotation.
