TBI ?

Post by RZ350 »

Not wanting to open a can of worms here LOL, but has anyone considered the idea of a simple TBI conversion? I'm think that as a simple way to get FI this might work. Obviously you'd need to come up with an intake design for it as no one makes one, but I'm thinking that a unit designed for a 4cyl automotive application would work with a minimal expense. Something similar to the single carb conversions with a TBI from a four cylinder Car, should be fairly easy to tune. I have only rattled the idea around a little bit in my head, but it seemed interesting. ECU might be an issue I suppose.

Hmmm I'll look closer it seemed like they were more into port injection, but I will look a little deeper. And yeah basically the most simple type of injection like a very simple electronic carb. I got thinking about it, because I helped a buddy drop one of the new "self tuning" TBI kits on an old Dodge truck. One of the simplest swaps I've ever seen. Almost "plug and play". Drop it in, fire the truck and drive it. After about an hour it ran like a new truck, and got a 10% increase in fuel mileage over the stock carb. Along with a bit more power, and of course no more cold start issues. Dunno if it would be even close to that simple here, but I wonder......

My first thoughts are that you would need to find the right diameter runners to get the air fuel mix to the combustion chambers without falling out. Some of the recent single carb guys are having better luck with smaller diameters, like the 1200's. But, maybe there isn't as much temperature drop as in a carb venturi?? This has potential. I can't remember anyone even asking this.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

with sufficient intake vacuum the charge will stay vaporized. Keep the intake runners hot & that helps as well.
My greayter concern would be intake charge dilution.
The radical cam overlap numbers of motorcycle engines requires IR systems in order to run clean as well as pull well and idle smoothly.

Excellent points and I hadn't gotten that deep into the thought process. This is one of the reasons I asked the question, as I knew I'd get intelligent answers. Apparently it's been tried though the level of success is subject to debate LOL. Still I'll be thinking about this one for a bit.
