Wog's '84 Standard restoration
Pick up this bike for a great price last week.
Pics from the Craigslist ad.. And back at my place after a long 8 minute journey. I've already done the title work and got the antique plate, so
away we go!

Re: Wog's '84 Standard restoration
Last plated here in Florida in 2007.
Paint has a few chips here and there, but overall in good condition.
Looks like someone backed it into a wall. Does turn over, but the carbs and chokes are frozen.
I already had the Gates belts and a Randakk kit, so they will go to this one.
Craigslist ad said "good compression", yeah right,
Left side both at 90, which I'm sure will improve when it gets back on the road.
Right side both at 30!
While it was still on the trailer, I installed the new belts and put in some fresh gas and she coughed a few times but flooded and gas started dumping out of the carbs.
At least there's hope.
Here's a new trick I came up with to hold the right pulley in place.
Instead of removing the old belt, letting it snap over, then holding in back in place for the new one,
I zip tied the pulley while the old belt was still on, made sure the new one was in the loop, and cut off the old belt with a knife. Worked like a charm. Didn't move at all.
Today got it up on the lift and removed the carbs.

Nice looking bike, hope not to many problems when you get into it. Great tip with the belts, make sure you cut the right one!
Previous Rides,
1980 CB250N Good to learn on
1981 CX500 good mid range tourer, went to Austria on it!
1983 GL1100C Pride and joy, sold when I bought my 1st house, big mistake
1985 GL650 Silverwing another mistake, horrible bike
1986 CBX550 Good commuter
1989 Suzuki GS750 (1976) cheap and cheerful until a dog ran out in front of me on Xmas Eve, 1991
Current bikes
2010 CB1300 back on a bike after 19 years, two divorces, children grown up etc
1980 GL1100 NOW ON THE ROAD, still use CB1300.

Looks like the frame is in good condition.
Someone added about 2 lbs of filler when welding the kick stand back on! Nice that it's removable, so shouldn't be a big deal to grind it all down and tig it.
I didn't think the Standards came with engine guards.
Might go without.

Re: Wog's '84 Standard restoration
That is a fine specimen. A beauty.
You got all the impossible to find parts there:
Headlamp mount brackets
Front Indicator mounts
Front Honda emblem
Plastic side trims behind radiator
Radiator cowl plastic bits
Plastic filler pieces front of shelter each side.
And of course the grab rail.
What do you have planned for the rear fender? A replacement would be difficult to find.
I spent a year looking for one.

For the time being, straighten it out the best I can, touch it up, and live with it.
Already have it as a saved search on Ebay!
Hate to farm anything out, but maybe in the future have a real painter fix it.

Re: Wog's '84 Standard restoration
Getting it repainted would probably be cheaper. Even IF you can find a replacement fender, AND it's in good shape (a big "if"), you've got a 50/50 chance of it being the right color.
If you can get that motor turning, you got the deal of the decade.

My standard has the crash bars and most I've seen had them.
Not completely sure they came stock tho.
For me they make a great alternate foot rest on long days .......

Re: Wog's '84 Standard restoration
Pics on the web show different styles, but mostly like the ones that came on it, and the same as the other 1200's I have.
The reason I questioned it, is the picture in the front part of the Honda Service Manual shows without. Mine is the '84-'86 version. Guess what I've been doing today... Puttin' the ultrasonic cleaner to work.
Carbs 1&3 are still frozen shut.
But I'll get there....

Re: Wog's '84 Standard restoration
Amazing how just a year difference makes on some parts even the same model.
All of the "starter valve posts" (part of the choke system) were completely frozen in place.
Was able to use a propane torch to heat up the area and remove 3 of 4.
The forth, of course had to snap off the end while trying to remove it.
So I thought, just steal one from the '85 parked outside.
Shape is the same except it is a completely different part number and has a pin at the end. I'll grind the pin off, and install it for now. Hopefully it will seal ok.
Did order the correct part, but won't have it until after the holiday.

Re: Wog's '84 Standard restoration
Are you sure the 84 isn't supposed to have the pins? My 85 had the pins. Different numbers? Maybe a part fiche will have photos.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: Wog's '84 Standard restoration
Yep, all four from the '84 without.
And different part numbers.
The carb bodies have a hole, so maybe the later pin style would work, but I've already ground it off.
The ends of the '84 style have just an embedded rubber disk to create the seal.
It's easy enough to replace with the new ordered one with the rack back on the bike.
