SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
SDC = Sly Dog Cafe
Hey everyone... It's about time I got this thread started.. I've been posting WAY too much on Facebook and I'm sure I got some people annoyed. "Go post it up on NGWClub.com" has been said a few times.. So here I am. WARNING!! I talk a lot. But good news.. I take a lot of pictures too.
Back story. My dad bought a 1982 Goldwing Interstate ages ago. I took it, rebuilt it. It was... dum dum dummmmm El Jefe!!!
http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=34697
Rode it for a while.. blew the engine... FAIL!
http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=48984
Long story short.. the check engine light (oil light) was dead.. had a dead bulb.. i didn't check the oil for 2000 miles.. it was due.. Engine seized. I took the engine apart.. Bearings were shot.. crank was shot.. pistons were shot.. case was shot.. oil pump was shot.. El Jefe was dead..
So That happened back in August of 2013.. sloppy end to a riding season.
I kept my eyes open for anything and then in January I found this on Craigslist. A 1980 Honda Goldwing GL1100 Standard with 19000 miles on it for $800!!!!
It was in a lady's heated garage since 1987!! Her husband had passed away and she parked it ever since. He had purchased it new and was the original owner. He had an index card with every oil change and services listed and dated on it in the add on saddle bags! there was an add on sissy bar and fairing and the rest was stock. The outside is immaculate but the inside had turned to varnish and tar. It needs to be taken apart and cleaned.

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
So the first thing I did was I dug in and started tearing the old gurl down. As soon as I opened the gas tank I was hit in the face with 26 year old gas fumes and RUST RUST RUST!! So I brought ol' El Jefe in from the shed and put them face to face and tried to figure out what I was going to be able to use and what I was NOT.
Then I took the Saddle bags off. Shoei bags (and I even found the installation instructions for them in the bottom of the bags). Aside from a few scratches, they are in great shape. All the mounting hardware is safe and sound. All the lights work.
Took off the Sissy bar and donated it to my Bike shop. (shout out to Satan Cycles of Ravena, NY)
Took off the Fairing. Turns out it's a classic fairing from a company called "Fulmer". It's missing the windshild but other than that it's in good shape. No paint chipping or anything. all mounting parts accounted for.
Side panels are in mint condition.

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
OK so there were some problems along the path to just getting her in the Garage. The bike was purchased in Jersy and needed to travel 150 miles north during a snow storm! AND it was not rolling well. We figured the bearings were shot or the calipers were clamped closed and they were stuck or something like that. It also had a flat front tire with a nail in it. So that didn't help. So the snow was a good thing!! Helped slide it around a little.
We couldn't get the engine to turn at all but when we put jumper cables on it, all the lights and electrical worked perfectly. The throttle twist was locked. Wouldn't move. Carbs wouldn't budge at all. Nothing was flowing through the petcock. The front breaks didn't work or so we thought and even though it seemed like the back breaks worked, when i got it home, there was no fluid in the rear break reservoir.
So like I said.. SHINY on the outside!! REALLY shiny on the outside. I figured that I could part out what I didn't want an still easily make my money back on the new parts I was going to have to invest in. We still have to see about that later. Anyway..
MORE PICS..
I started to dig deeper.. I took off the shelter, the seat, the fairing, side panels, yada yada.. the boring stuff.. when I opened the air box I found that this had been a dwelling for some tenants at some point in time. I also removed the exhaust and found a TON more in the baffles!!
Anyway.. I got the carbs out and they wouldn't turn AT ALL!! i took the float bowls off and found out why.. the whole thing was filled with TAR!! the fuel turned to varnish. it was black gewy sticky disgusting rock solid paste! all over! It was in the tubs and all over the butterfly valves and the floats and everything.

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
for reference i'll call the '80 bike number 2 and the '82 bike number 1 because that's the order i got them..
so i kept tearing them BOTH apart..
I ordered a full carb rebuild kit WITH new jets this time. LATER i found out that was a mistake and i'll get into that later. But i'm well past that now.
I got the rear fender, tire and tank out next so i could get the gas out of that death trap. it really smelled BAD!
i had both the carb racks from bike 1 and 2 on the bench at the same time and felt like a rock start (posted that on facebook)
TIRES EVERYWHERE!
she was looked REALLY naked now.
biked number 1 was even MORE naked than the new bike 2!

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
But I still had a LOT more work to do!
I went out and got a bucket of Napa Carb Cleaner with the dipping tray and tore those carb apart. I stayed at it for almost 3 weeks straight!! Here is the difference between one clean and one dirty.
Now here is some tips for other NOOBS out there like me. Please don't make the same mistakes I made!!
First tip:
The 1980 carb bodies have PRESSED in slow jets and the '81-'82 have THREADED slow jets.. there IS a thread on how to get them out with a video but I want to elaborate on how I did mine.. it was a bit easier.
Get a long screw (dry wall screws will do) something with some bite right at the TIP.. and screw it RIGHT into the pressed in slow jet. IT'S OK!! the important part of the slow jet is the TINY PIN HOLE in the middle... not the top where you are putting the screw into. so get that screw in there and get it in there good. The head of the screw should extend out of the carb body by an inch or 2. Put that head of the screw into a bench vice and leave about 1/4" space between the vice and the carb body. Then use a pretty hefty flat tip screwdriver and carefully pry the carb/throttle body away from the vice. If it works (mine did 4 times PERFECTLY), it should very gently pull the pressed in slow jet out of the carb while still attached to the screw. the screw will stay in the vice and you can keep 1 hand on the carb and 1 hand on the screw driver the whole time. BAM.
next tip.
ALWAYS GET OEM JETS... don't do what i did and buy some knock off jet kit that comes with "everything" because they don't come with "everything"! they NEVER come with "everything"! and they ALWAYS come with MORE that something that you DON'T need!! GET RANDAKK'S KIT!!! then GET THE JET'S YOU NEED!!! not the ones you THINK you need..
Now i'll explain ... THE JET KIT I GOT WAS CRAP!! the idle / pilot jets were NOT the same as the OEM and the tips got crushed and stuck and broke off inside carbs 1 and 2!! i had to scrap them and re-use the carb bodies from the '82!! trust me.. i tried everything.. i tried to use a dental pick, i tried to drill it out, i tried to torch them (thinking the body would heat and expand before the brass), nothing worked... they are ruined.

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
OH YEA.. the accelerator pump that came with the kit was the wrong length too!!!
i had to shave it down on a wheel grinder! and then i screwed that up and made it too short!
so i took the one i got from Randakk out of the '82 (it was only a couple of months old and in really good condition)
Anyway.. I kept going with the carbs and they eventually got done and now they are BEAUTIFUL!!

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
So i started to dig into the ENGINE.. we are now up to March 2014.
the heads gave me some trouble.. they felt like they were held on by the hands of GOD!
the gaskets just wouldn't let go.. i let it sit for a week.. then i went back at it and one night i hit it with a 5 pound rubber mallet and it came off on the first hit!!!
*SURPRISE!*
so... I CLEANED THEM!!!
i got all the gasket material off but i sent the heads out for resurfacing anyway.
the cylinder walls looked great!
all in all.. job well done there.
i went out and bought a small tub of valve grinding paste and the suction cup lapping tool.. watched a few youtube videos and did all the valves.. SUPER easy!
everything went BETTER than expected! i did NOT take apart the cams and rockers.. i just left them exactly as they were. i don't know the whole thing with the correct valve adjustment screws and settings so i just left it alone!! I'll re install the whole thing as it was! If it's off at all, I can take it to my shop and we can adjust it there.

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
So now we are kind of up to date.. It's April. I have the fender, the gas tank, the side panels and the shelter at the paint shop. they should be done in the next week or two.
i have fork seals here in the garage. i still have to do that.
i picked up the tires last week.. i have to clean and polish the rims.
i'm still working on the engine..
this week i took apart the front and rear engine covers.
i got the water pump out and it was sticky so i just ordered a new one. waiting for that to arrive.
i got the clutch plates and springs out.. i have to order new ones.
the oil pump looks fine. i'm going to leave it in but i screwed up one of the bolts/screws trying to get at it... so i'll have to order new ones.
OH i also ordered some new drag bars (black powder coated) and i'm going to re-use my black powder coated timing belt covers and black powder coated valve covers too.
paint scheme is going to be satin black on the sides and gloss black down the middle. (you'll see)
