Erector Set/Treasure Hunt aka Benelli Dynamo

#1

Post by polkadot »

Just started on a little winter project. A friend (we shall see if he retains that title after this project) sold me one of his mini bikes he had purchased but was unable to get to. It is a Benelli mini bike. It has no title so it is a back yard/infield bike. It is a Dynamo but not sure of the year or if it is a trail or compact. I think it is 65cc (maybe 50cc), but have not discovered that info on the engine yet. I am guessing late 60's or early 70's. I took it about half apart last night and should have it completely disassembled by this weekend. I'll just go part by part and see what I need to do. Most of it is there. It had good compression, but I did not try to start it. Let me know if we have anybody out there that had one of these little devils in a past life. I'll post pics asap. ern
Hope for the best, expect the worst and take what comes!

Sound like a fun one (for those that think this kind of thing is fun ;) ) and will be interesting.

Had to move this thread to Restos/Projects forum.

Here is what she looked like when I dragged her into the basement. At this point she is about 50% disassembled and will be in parts by the weekend.

Plans for the engine? Two strokes have bearings and seals for the crank in the cases. Roller bearings on the small end of the rod for the wrist pin in the piston. So watch for that when you take the piston off.

It would be neat but I've spent hours at races and around pit bikes. The 2 strokes are not high on the list for this type of work. Having a transmission isn't that great either. Something like a Honda elite or similar is easier. Or at least a centrifugal clutch. Many times you don't have both hands available. ;)

But do not take that as knock for this project. I used to ride with a couple guys that had these. Back in the day when they were new.

Looks like a great project Ern,

HUH? You technical guys drive me nuts! I'm primarily a cleaner and polisher! Just ask any of the 898 guys, what is my favorite tool? I has a hopin ta kleen er up, a put a lil bit o oil n gaz in er an a hope she fired up! Maybe even pray a bit! What could go wrong with that plan? (See my 90 thread for details).

Greg, Thanks for the confidence, but this will be a "refresh" at best. Not being a mechanical/motor/grease/oil/gears/ etc kind of guy, when I look back to my first GL project, I am AMAZED that I got it all back together and running!
Here is where she sits now.

You're gonna have a blast.

Did you find any frame numbers? Maybe there's a Bennelli club or something that could help decipher the number and tell you what year it is.
I found everything I needed for the Vespa. A lot of it needed rework before it would fit right but it was out there.

Greg, I wasn't real enthused at first, but am getting into it now. I contacted one "expert" so far and he was not a lot of help. I just started the research though. My fist purchase was an owners manual and parts guide. Without them, I really have no way of knowing what was original. I for sure have some "creative" modifications to the bike that will have to be addressed. I am getting way ahead here, but what was the oil/fuel ratio in these bikes?
