'72 CB350 cafe "resto-mod"

#1

Post by luludog »

Always wanted to do a CB350 cafe. Will be a mix of new technology & vintage power.
Hope to have it done for spring/2014.

Bought a '72 CB350 from a friend. Here it is after getting it home.
Image

Plans are to keep the 350 engine with a few performance mods. Front forks are from a Suzuki GSX-R750, and the rear from a Honda CBR600.

Here's some pics of the progress so far.

lulu-D that is one good looking project!!!
It is nice to start with a clean sandblasted frame everything clean & ready to weld.
I like the stand you are using & the way you have it tied down.
I see too many guys working on the floor & hurting their backs.
Please take lots of pictures and tell the story here.
There are many guys here who would love to follow along!!!

Thanks.
-------------------
Here's a list of the parts so far.
- 2008 GSX-R750 forks, brakes, master cylinder, clip-ons & bar switches (even has a "passing" button for the high beam & 4-way flashers _ I love electrical techie stuff!)
- 1999 CBR600F4 swingarm, shock, linkage & brakes
- 2000 CBR600 rear wheel
- 2009 GSX-R750 front wheel w/2008 rotors
- All Balls bearings & seals to fit the GSXR forks on the CB frame head
http://www.allballsracing.com/ click on the "Conversions" tab
- Continental Motion-Sport Radial tires, Front 120/70-17, Rear 180/55-17
-2003 CBR600 left rear set (shifter)
-2005 CBR600 right rear set (brake lever w/master cylinder)

Next, need to start in on the engine. Want to get it apart. Clean up the cases, head & cylinder. Bolt it back up with the shifter shaft, counter shaft and kick starter shaft in place. Fit it in the frame and start addressing sprocket alignment & rear set locations.

Thanks guys. Plenty of challenges lay ahead :o :-D
-----------------------------------------------------

Took the engine apart to clean it a bit. Put the cases, cylinder & head back together to check sprocket alignment.

Here's some pics of the engine

Waiting on the rear sprocket. Then I can start to look at how to align them. Rough measurement is about 3/4" offset from one sprocket to the other.

3/4" is quite a bit. You have a plan in mind yet? We run a 5/8" offset front sprocket on the race bikes. Sometimes the chain then hits the inside of the frame. Some don't. Just the tolerance's in frame's.

Robin, the swingarm sprocket is wider than the engine sprocket. Thinking of going out with an offset sprocket on the counter shaft and milling off some of the rear hub where the sprocket mounts. Where do you get your offset sprockets? Thanks

ole496, thanks, progress will be slow for a while... summer tends to occupy my time :-D

You'll need to get both sprockets the same for the chain size that you use. Our sprockets only fit KZ900/1000 and GS1000/1100. They are 3/8" or 5/8" depending on the width of the tire. Or you can get 3" for a car tire. You might check with a guy in FL. D & G Chassis I think is the name of the place. Owner is Dave. He might be able to make you a front sprocket with offset you need that will match the size of rear sprocket you have. You'll need to do some precise measuring though. Only want to pay for that once. And you'll need to get the tooth count where you want it too.

Let me do some checking on D & G. I just switched computers and don't have that link on this one. Found it, dgchassis.net. Also sending you a PM.

Easy to see this is going to be a great build. I am a little disappointed you aren't going to keep the "snow tire" though.

And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair

Apologize for the long delay. Summer & Fall were great. Lots of camping, riding and spending time with the family.
Winter is upon us (1st snow fall today) Plan on getting back on this project.

Haven't done much but think about what I'd like. Thought I'd start with the electrical.

Plan is to go with LED's .

Here's what I got.

LED Headlight. This unit is from the UK. Very, very bright. One beam for low, the two other LED's come on for high. The center light is a "parking light".
Image

These are good turn signals, but weren't as bright as I thought they'd be.
Image

I'm going with these. Very bright, from the front and sideways. Got them out of Amazon.
Image

Thought about mounting these up front as supplemental lights. I'm glad I only paid $4 for them. Poorly made... won't be using them.
Image

Visibility is important, so these LED fog lights will be mounted up front. They're only about 1" dia. Super bright! Got them on Ebay
Image

Probably use the 4-way flasher switch on the GSXR controls for a light switch. The passing switch (momentary), will be for the strobe. This will flash the turn signals & fog lights through a preset pattern. Should get "their" attention :-D
Image

Cardboard mock-up of the battery. Rectifier/regular (from Honda Twins member - Sonreir)
Image

Brake light flasher unit. Used these before. Works well.
Image

Going with a GPS speedo. This one is from SpeedHut (modified so the tach is the larger gauge.
Image

Horns... left is one off an ST1300, right an aftermarket. Will probably go with the ST (smaller, just as loud)
Image

I like gauges... One on left is a typical 52mm/2". the right one is NLA, made back in the 70's. Its an Autogauge 1 1/2"
Image

Need to do some machining, but It'll fit where the GSXR switch use to be.
Image

Not sure how yet, but I'd like to have a hydraulic clutch. More on this later...
Image

Relocated the front mounting tabs for the gas tank
Image

1970 CB350 tank. Still need to fab the rear mount.
Image

Working on the rear swingarm. Fab'd up some brackets. Much more to do.
Image

Progress will be slow, but still hoping to have it done for May/June 2014.
