Fuel pump upgrade ( electric ) on 1975 K1

#1

Post by snuskebasse »

Hi all,

I did the needed jobs on my GL1000 K1 like rebuilding carbs, renewing timing belts, Dyna S installation, replacing one ignition coil, rebuilding the 30 A main switch, checking ground and supply resistance all around, BUT the idle was terrible: back firing now and then, rev. changing between 0 and 3000 rpm. :-?

I moved the fuel pump tubes to an electric pump from an Yamaha R1 ( Carb. version !! ), and amasingly the old bike started like a charm and has super cold control with the choke. :crosso

I attach some few pictures of the set-up and later the optional electronics to control the pump,

rdgs, Erik

Hi,

Thanx for your compliments, they are always nice to have and to recall later on ;)

I will test the electronic fuel pump control circuit in the near future and upload info here crossy.gif

BTW, rdgs is used in England and is an abbreviation of regards,

Best regards, Erik

I have now tested the electronic fuel pump control "on bike", and it works as intended crossy.gif

In case someone would like to make it, I have added the schematics. It is made with Eagle schematics and PCB design program, just post a message, then I will provide all the files needed to "repeat the success", :crosso

Why is an electronic control necessary to control the fuel pump? Is this for an EFI setup?

It is mostly for safety reasons. The pump is only getting battery supply in 3 sec. after ignition is turned on, and when signals are received from one of coils primary circuit,

Very nice setup you have. Can you share some photos from far away to let us see how it looks overall?

I like your idea of the control circuit. I may build something similar, if I don't decide to do an analog version (Pump runs in neutral and when the clutch lever is pulled, and when the engine has oil pressure , relay controlled)

I like this idea of the control circuit. I was able to order all of the required parts (except the relay, which I have on hand) from http://www.mouser.com for less than $20, including the enclosure.
If this is used on a bike with a Dyna electronic ignition, a .01uf cap is needed in series with R4, or the engine will not run.
